I have been seeking for loads for the .500 ne but I dont find the info I want...
One says you are good att 2000fps with 570 grains... some other says 2150 is the original load....
the 3rd says at 2200fps it starts to ceep the precision..
What speeds are possible in a modern double in .500 ne? without over pressure with a 570 grain bullet.
I am thinking of a blaser s2.....
Sorry for my bad English.

I think so long as you are somewhere between 2000-2100 fps you are fine. More than that, and I question whether any incremental benefit you gain is worth the cost in recoil. Most I have shot will regulation between 2000-2100 fps. The old velocities (2150 fps) were frequently done out of longer barrels than most doubles have today.

Overkill, I have a Blaser S2 in 500 NE. This is a link to my thread several years ago:

If the link doesn't work, search the Double Rifle forum for "Tradition, Beauty and Technology". I will have to check the targets for velocities.

I don't think the question of what speeds are possible is correct. The search is for what speed attains proper regulation.

The old Kynoch, Eley, and manufacturer's ballistics were taken from 28-inch barrels. Then, as today, the makers liked to puff up their velocity (and thusly energy) figures. However, most nitro proved doubles were not made with barrels that long. When developing a load today, one generally subtracts 25 fps for the published velocity figure for every inch of barrel that is shorter than 28. Nothing is carved in stone but this is a good place to start. Now, shooting a modern double is out of my arena and I imagine new doubles can be shot with hotter loads and regulated for accuracy with them. The above has worked fine in my old nitro doubles in .350no2, .450-400 3", .450no2, .500, .577, and .600. (A little more work is required for bpe and bore rifles due to the burn rate of modern black powder compared with the burn rate of the old C&H's no6.

When working with a double rifle, one has to remove the modern mindset of magnum-mania and trying to attain the highest velocity, and settle for what gives the best accuracy with the safest pressures.
Cheers,
Cal

PS. Excuse my poor SwedishFrownerfrom google translate

Cal

Original ballistics, I would say anywhere from around 1950 fps to 2050fps, for the 500 Nitro.

Cal has the right answer...the speed that it regulates. My VC500 regulates very well with 475gr Raptors and 510gr CEB solids running at 2390fps and that's out of 24" barrels. With 570's, it regulates well between 2050 and 2150fps.
