OK guys... Been a while since I posted... I've been lurking around and enjoying the back and forth.

I saw something that I felt compelled to report since many searching for doubles come here first...

A year or two ago I bought a Siace double rifle in 45-70 from Steve Barnett. The gun was listed "as new". When I received the double, it was the farthest thing from "as new". Steve Barnett has the gun back up for sale:

http://www.gunsinternational.c...cfm?gun_id=100454895

This double rifle had barrels that had become unsoldered, The grip was cracked at the tang down through the wrist, the stock had multiple what I would describe as significant scratches and handling marks. I posted pictures here and many of you were very helpful resolving the issue.

To Steve's credit, the moment I reached out to him, he said he would take care of it, and he did.

I can tell from the pictures that the crack from the tang through the wrist has not been fixed - That's not to say that Steve didn't have barrels fixed.

I'm not trying to denigrate Steve Barnett in any way or hurt his business. As I said above, he immediately fixed the situation.

In the condition I received the gun, I do not think it would have been safe to shoot. If you're looking at this gun, be sure to have it checked out.

P.S. Here is a link to my original post back when I received the gun:

Confirmed. He has some nice stuff at times, but you really have to be careful. Always way overpriced, and very difficult to contact.

That Daniel Frasier 450-400 seems to be a BPE and, if so, is astronomically overpriced.

I don't know Steve but as with most dealers he is very high on prices but if he gets them, why not?
However, his description of the rifle for the original poster was criminal. It seems most gun dealers come from the same genetic pool as used car dealers.

For a straight shooter I don't think George Caswell at Champlins can be beat.

+2 on that.
Although I have dealt with both Barnett and Caswell, there is a distinct difference between their dealing styles and general devotion to their chosen field.
Often, I have noticed, George gets genuinely excited about gun dealing and firearms in general where Barnett comes across as it being strictly a business proposition. Granted, I have more personal interaction with George, but if you go into discussion with Steve knowing the ground, you can come away with a reasonable deal.

FWIW, my take on the difference is that with Barnett's if you are an educated buyer you can weed through the BS descriptions but run the high risk of return freight charges when the gun arrives and there is something significantly wrong with it that YOU discover that was not disclosed.

Whereas with George, the gun will meet expectations and be in the condition described and safe to shoot if so described. I don't always agree with George's interpretation of X% case colors or blue or whatever, but he is consistent. I would feel entirely comfortable referring a first time buyer to George, he would be fairly treated.

I have done business with George Caswell and known him for over 20 years.

I can say he is a man of his word, and a fine fella to do busines with.

Ditto!
I don't know if you will ever get a "Deal" from George. Most importantly, you will know exact condition of the rifle and George is a man of his word!

Would agree with the above posts. I have purchased several rifles from George Caswell over the years and sold a double through him. The transactions were always seamless and straight.
