I've had some requests for the elephant and hippo hide culling belts from Australians, but don't know if they are legal to import/own there.

Can any Australians tell me?

Iffy.

Not sure you can import Elephant into Aus.

It would need careful reading of the regulations
and ATM I can't remember which department it is.

Will try to look it up.

I think this still applies, as in this is still the current situation.

"Accordingly, the import and export of elephant products around the world is strictly
regulated. While some Elephant populations are listed on CITES Appendix II for
particular products (eg hunting trophies), Australia treats all Elephants and products
derived from them as though they are listed on CITES Appendix I. These “stricter
domestic measures” reflect the Australian Government’s position that all Elephant
populations require the highest level of protection.

CAN I IMPORT ELEPHANT PRODUCTS?
Only Elephant products that were taken from an animal before 1975 (for Indian
Elephants) or 1977 (for African Elephants) may be imported into Australia. These items
are referred to as “pre-CITES” items and are allowed to be traded as they were
obtained from Elephants prior to the CITES controls taking effect.

Examples of Elephant products include carved ivory figurines, carved and uncarved
tusks, wallets, bags, furniture and other items made from skin, hair bracelets and
bagpipes with ivory tips.

To import such items you will have to obtain a pre-CITES Certificate issued by the
country of export. On arrival in Australia you must declare the items to the Australian
Customs Service and present the pre-CITES Certificate."

So the answer is no to Elephant products.
