They list two new Dangerous game bullets, the DGX (expanding) and DGS (solid). The calibers listed are:

375 H&H and Ruger, 450/400 , 416 Rigby and 458 Win and Lott.

They both are copper clad steel jacketed with a flat meplat design.

I'll take a look at them at DSC.

I talked to their bullet designer yesterday, who showed the features of the new soft and solid. I like the flat metplat and the idea behind the solid, with a thinner steel jacket at the tip and much thicker behind. I sure like the focus these guys are placing on the african calibers, as well as their ongoing improvements. It'll be interesting to see when these get tested on game.

I also visited Steve Hornady and personnally thanked him for getting the 450-400 back in play. I sure love having the pipeline of components for my rifle.

Apparently, 404 Jeff ammo and components are on the way, as are the dies for the 450-400, 450 NE. Good news. Bob

Suppose this is why Hornady 450/400 ammo won't be produced until May - June?

Makes you wonder how they regulated the Heym guns with Hornady as shown at DSC as I was told they were. Would this matter? hornady does not come up on the State Department Regristry for imports but maybe an individual or a company shipped it.I doubt it though
The time doesnt match what everyone saying at heym or hornady or what ive seen on the net. it wont matter though on the first rifles already in country.

Where did you hear that? They've already shipped some, but I heard it wasn't nearly enough for all those that wanted some.
Here is some on Gunbroker:

I'm sure a lot of the first run went to the gunmakers in Europe, hence why guns are available at DSC/SCI.

"Michael,

It looks like ammunition production is scheduled for May-June.

I am, however, currently reloading Hornady 450/400 brass.

The Hornady 450/400 loaded ammo currently available is with their "old" style of bullet.

That's right from the horse's mouth!! I coulda swore the guy at the Hornady booth at DSC said they were loading some right now. I thought the 450 NE was going to be this spring.

Oh well. I guess we'll see it when we see it!!

The 450NE, and the 450/400NE 3 1/4",will be coming in the spring, The 450/400NE is already out, I shot some of it Tuesady of this week in the new Heym 450/400NE 3" that Chris (New Guy) brought to the DRSS shoot! Both ammo, and that rifle are winners in the accuracy department! thumb

I talked with Steve at Salt Lake City yesterday. They are going to make 500 Nitro express ammo. dealer cost will be around $90.00 a box of 20. Hornady is going to make there own brass, they won't be subbing it out to another company. Oh by the way, 470NE in Hornady will be out by summer.

Mac & all

Sorry about the confusion. I recieved that email from Hornady in December. I will try again to get a box of factory loads. Even though I reload, I would like to see how they regulate in my Searcy.

Has anyone shot the Hornady 450/400 factory ammo over a chrono? I like to know the actual velocity people are getting.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what type of powder Hornady is using in this ammo?

Just an FYI - I called Hornady yesterday to try and purchase some 400gr DGX bullets; they did not have them yet and didn't know when they would. I did find a couple of places on the web that have the ammo available though.

The Hornady soft ammo available in 450/400 3" is not loaded with the DGX. It is loaded with their regular lead core copper jacketed design.

They are unsure when they will produce a .410 DGX if at all. I suspect they went to all the trouble to come out with a .410 bullet prior to coming out with the DGX and have a supply on hand they want to sell.

It's the only explanation I could think off to not do the DGX in 450/400. I asked them if that was the case and they wouldn't/couldn't answer.

If anyone has used the DGX (458) in a vintage gun I'd love to hear about it. The steel jacket makes me stick with the Woodleighs for now.

Jim, I can't vouch for it, but Cabela's is advertising 450/400 3" ammo with 400gr DGX's.

I know, it's a mistake.

When you go to buy it the description says "RN".

While we're on the topic of the .450-400, have you noticed Zoli's new?
OK, I know, it's a Zoli, let's not get into the "why buy a Zoli when there are guns available?"
And let's not get into o/u v. s/s either, ok?

My question is this: how the DEVIL does it cost the same as the Heym ? In fact, if you look at the prices, the Heym in 9,3 is $1500 cheaper and that's a chunk of money to me!
I mean, a Heym is, well, a HEYM and at the end of the day a Zoli is but a Zoli.
The Heym is single-trigger and seems to be more poorly specced than the Zoli, but still?

Also I did a price check on Krieghoff and surprisingly their o/u doubles starting prices are in the same range (in 9,3x74R). I would have expected double the price for sure in comparison to the Zoli and some 50% more than the Heym.

I'm not a 100% sure but I was told that Hornady brass was made by Winchester at this time, which is OK in my book.

put a magnet to the bullet and this will tell you the answer instantly......

The bullets made by Hornady for the last several years have no steel in them.....the DGX has steel and the magnet will attach sharply!

I have had my Searcy out a couple of times shooting Hornady DGX ammunition. On a cooler day (50's) I was getting 2088 fps average. Today was warmer (mid-70's) and I was getting 2124 fps average. Not bad relative to the advertised 2150 fps.
