Attended gun show this week end and dealer had one on his table. Stamped Remington but we all know where it came from and upon trying to open, very, very stiff. Don't know that is a bad thing, just very obvious in attempting to open and inspect. Doubt the rifle weighed 7 lbs (perhaps less) and so called recoil pad must come from the same source Ruger uses-not very absorbant at all. Balance not bad, fairly neutral held at trigger guard, wood very common and not sure what species of wood it is, but had some sturdy/sharp checkering patterns and kind of dull looking stain finish. Did not dry fire, two triggers, small almost useless rear sight picture when put in firing position. Did seem to have some sort of arrangement for scope bases, dovetails cut in middle rib w/ front one occupied by the smallish rear sight blade. Asking price I believe was 900 range. Would I pay that much for one, not really. Believe it would kick fair amount even in '06 and you would have to do something with that rear sight. Not really a problem with a little blacksmithing, but barrels looked a bit on the thin side and have no idea as to accuracy potential at 100 yards or under. Having shot prone long range bolt guns for some decades, regardless of how little or worse how much they cost, rifles which deliver 2-3"(per barrel) groups at 50 yards, just does not impress me one bit. Dealer was asked about the possible 45/70 version and he stated that his source said that none were coming with Remington stamped on them. I am sure he was telling the truth, but who knows. I would say that a 45/70 loaded a bit warm would surely give you a smack down due to weight and lots of drop in stock. Yes it does meet the definition of a double rifle, but just barely compared to the others observed over the years. Hey, pretty is as pretty does and the thing may be a real sleeper and look forward to some glowing reports on the Remington Double Rifle. | ||
