Does anyone know what double rifle was used in the movie "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" by the character "Allan Quatermain" played by Sean Connery?

It was an Underlever, Hammer double with very long barrels and the bore did not look to be too big.

Don't know that rifle. But I know the rifle Denys , aka Robert Redford used in Out of Africa. I held it and opened and closed the action and looked at it in awe, a few years ago. It is a H&H Royal in 500/465. The tag said not for sale and I put it back in the rack and picked up a book and it was signed by Karen Blixen.

Here is "Matilda" what Allan Quartemain called her.

A double barrled exposed hammer express rifle dubbed "Matilda" by Sean Connery's character, Allan Quartemain, in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (20th Century Fox, 2003). Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from 20th Century Fox and a copy of the film. 44 1/2 inches.

I'm pretty sure that in King Solomon's Mines (the book) he used a .500 Blackpowder Express, so if they stayed true to form, that's what Matilda should be.

Hey Mike, I thought the "Out of Africa" H&H was a .500/.450 Royal.

Just asking.

I have held that rifle as well, several different times. If I remember correctly it is a 500/450.

I have always wondered about that double in Out of Africa. It looks as though there is a plate underneath the ends of the barrels. Was/is that common?

Is that rifle held by a private collector?

Baxter, don't think there is a "plate" there. Simply a bottom rib. But indeed there is extra metal about 1/2"-1' below the muzzle. If I recall, it's part of George's private collection.

Yeah, plate wasn't quite accurate. Here is a pic. Is there just a short section of rib under the ends of the barrel?? Looks like the rest is open ir is that an illusion.

I presume you mean George Caswell?

Ken, the double in the new James Bond is an Anderson Wheeler 500 NE. They have a bunch of pictures of it on their Facebook page.

Yes Baxter, as I thought. Just like mine. Yes, the true gentleman, George Caswell.

Indeed, it's an Anderson Wheeler. Sure looks like a Verney-Carron. Wink

Saw that rifle some years ago at Champlins. I believe it was for sale at the time, but can't be certain; certainly wasn't in my price-range. Beautiful rifle though.

"True to form"????? LOL!!!

You haven't actually seen "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", have you? It's a totally ridiculous misappropriation of several well-known names and ideas...once you get past the vampires, submarines, monsters and world-domination schemes, accepting an inaccuracy in choice of props is easy.
