I have just noticed, in only in two examples, so not extensive or statistically significant, that the muzzle velocity was significantly higher (100 fps) with 2 Kynoch wads over that of 1 Kynoch wad for the same powder charge. Anyone else notice this? ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Was the extreme spread with 2 wads less as well? DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Yeah, less spread in the 2 wad rounds. There is a small air gap (~ 1/4") with one wad and none, of course, with 2. Maybe I should be just using 2 wads: no air gap. I didn't think it would matter, but apparently does. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Yes. It works most of the time. Or is this another one of your bits of humor? If so, same answer: It works most of the time! ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Will In the 450 No2 I would use 2 of the Kynoch wads. You want not only NO airspace, but compression of the wad[s]. The wads I cut are twice as long as the Kynoch wads I have seen. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Thanks. I'll try it again with 2 wads tomorrow and see what happens. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. I only use one wad in my 450/400 3 inch. It is enough to fill the space up to the base of the bullet. Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. It has always been reccomended that with the use of any filler, no airspace is allowed. In fact, as Tony says, the filler should be slightly compressed by the seating of the bullet! According to Graeme Wright, Ross Sefried, and other double rifle knowledgeables, the airspace between the filler,and/or wad and the base of the bullet allows the wad to jump the distance, makeing the bullet become a secondary obstacle in the bore, causeing a severe pressure spike! Somtimes enough to ring the chamber! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Will, Even when I developed loads in the 450 No2 with IMR 4831 I had to use a filler, same holds true for the 475 No2. Those No2 cases are just BIG. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Ditto's, No airspace + compression of wads is very good medicine. Will try 1.5 wads against the 2 wads and see what it does to the velocity. I use 3 one inch wads in my 450bpe. The extra wad seem to have no effect on accuracy. Dave

That is the reason I use Dacron, I can weigh it and it comes out of the shot bore in a plug and I can inspect it...I don't want any air space.. That said anything you put in a cartridge case will raise pressure a bit..About 2000 PSI in a double that is properly wadded, and thats not a serious amount..How it shoots is the key your looking for..
