I've been giving serious thought to a Chapuis in 9.3x74R but seeing the photo of "NewGuy's" Heym got me to thinking about how the two compare in this caliber.

Quite a few here shoot the Chapuis--- does anyone shoot a Heym in 9.3x74r or similar medium-caliber?

I have not seen the Heym in 9.3 but in larger calibers the Heym rifles are very nice. I am sure you would be happy with one. The biggest difference will be in the cost. You might get 2 Chapuis for the price of one Heym.

While I have not owned a Heym in 9.3 I have owned one in 375 H&H and a Chapuis in 9.3. The Heym was by far the better looking and fitted of the 2. It also cost over twice as much. The Chapuis was a little quicker handling. Both were superb shooters. Which would I rather have, the Heym of course, which would I buy again, the Chapuis of course. What will my next 9.3 be, a Valmet/FinnClassic. Have owned 2 of those and they are 1/3 the price of the Chapuis and they shoot just as good.

Did you ever have any extraction/ejection problems with the H&H Heym?

I have not handled a 9,3 Heym, but I have handled a Heym 375. It was a nice double, with the "typical" Germanic feel to it.

DB Bill,

If you can swing the difference in price the Heym is the way to go. Is a much nicer and better built rifle. The Heym will have better resale and a bigger market for resale.

No.2,
Never had a failure to eject. In fact it threw them so far I usually turned the switch in the bottom of the forearm to off. I really liked both it and the Chapuis. As an interesting point when I sold them I didn't get appreciably more for the Heym than I did for the Chapuis. Selling a gun is just like anything else it's worth exactly as much as a buyer is willing to pay not one cent more.

While I have not owned either, I would DEFINITELY go with the Heym for durability.

I can confess that Thierry Chapuis told me that the only maker he is respecting like an equal is Merkel .
But when considering how far in metallurgy Chapuis is digging, that the 12 and 20 gauges assembly lines are distinct from the doubles lines. that Chapuis was for quite a long time a pioneer in CNC and he keeps a florishing custom workshop.

Considering that he is selling more doubles than any other makers...................and worse that he doesn't give a damn about marketing and advertising (how many times have I asked them to answer this forum, in vain).

Considering that I am hunting with my bro in law who is a Merkel owner, and that this f....double is messing up every 2 years, i am content with my RGEX.
Could be the first time I disagree with Dan 500grains. Sorry.

ROSCOE ---- just got some prices from Heym and they are, using the group buy prices, just about 2x the price of Chapuis.

SnowWolfe --- when my sons were in college followed by Grad school for one and Law school for the other, I learned what financial pain really was ----despite the fact we had set up college funds and that each of them received partial scholarships financially it was the equivalent of driving a new BMW off a cliff each year when I paid the bills....once they graduated I realized that if you want something badly enough you can make it happen.

I am trying to understand what you mean by

Does the comment mean that Chapuis considers Merkel to be its equal it its price range? Or are they saying that all other doubles are inferior to the Chapuis with the exception of Merkel?

I tend to take such statements made by any seller with a grain of salt. More often than not, what they are really saying is that the they are not threatened by the other.

I have a hard time imagining that they consider themselves higher in quality than Heym, or for that matter, Holland and Holland, Westley Richards, etc.

Yup, it isnt easy for me to purchase the Chapuis but I am tired of letting the years slip by me. I retired from the Air Force in 1992 and been self emploed as a wildlife photographer since then. We are not broke but to buy your very first rifle approaching $5,000 takes a lot of soul searching! Alas, after my Hein finally comes in next year my gun fund will be brokeFrowner.

What makes it a little easier for me is I shoot American Trap and compared to most trap guns the Chapuis is, if not cheap, at least a good bargain....I probably should sell a couple of my trap guns and buy both a SxS and an O/U Chapuis and keep the one I like the most. lol

tomo... how many shooters can say there were on a squad where he used to own the guns the other 4 guys were shooting....not a novelty for me. My main trap gun is a Bowen but there's also a K-80 combo and a Perazzi MX-8 that travel with me to shoots. The others are mostly "retired" and bask in their faded glory in one of my safes.

The Bowen was a $$$$ stretch but after doing the "pros & cons" for a couple of months I bought one. Didn't improve my scores all that much but I enjoy the craftsmanship of it and I look dapper carrying it back and forth to the truck.

sorry, a big mistake : Thierry told me the one that he respects is HEYM, NOT MERKEL.

That means that in his opinion, the quality of the other big manufacters are not as good. It's Thierry's opinion.
