A little double help??
I live in Lexington KY, and cannot find anyone remotely close to me that can measure me for fit on a double. I am open to suggestions, and also, the NRA convention is in Indy in late April. That is only 2.5 hours away, so would be an easy time and place to get fitted if possible.

Contact Butch Searcy. He has a way that you can measure yourself. As far as I know, his method works pretty well. perhaps others can chime in.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Tim,
I believe that you can access Butch's website and in one of the ordering sections are an order and fit sheet that you can print out. If not, a quick call and I bet he would email you one. You're just about my size so I would be willing to bet you'll be in the 15" LOP, mine is just a bit longer cause I'm better looking! jumping

Tim, bound to be a good shotgun shop over there somewhere with all the quail hunting?

I will confirm for Tim that nobody in Kentucky pretends to fit shotgun or double rifle stocks. Wink

Proper measurements for a double rifle? Sorry, but in my neck of the woods "bespoke" ain't in the vernacular.
I never got the adjustable "try gun" treatment.
Don't know anybody who does that sort of measurement.
I visited the Dakota factory in Sturgis, SD in 2005 and asked them if I could be measured for LOP.
Their method was to have a gunsmith observe me mounting a few of their completed bolt action rifles, of known LOP,
and then he guesstimated and told me a LOP with no actual tape measurements of me or rifle:
14.25". That was the prounouncement.
hilbily

In the year 2000, I got a new Merkel 470 NE with standard drop and cast off, with a standard 14.5" LOP to front trigger over a hard plastic butt plate. Tried it at the gun shop and it was comfortable to shoulder and sight over.
Before I knew better, I sent it back to Merkel, when they were in Alabama, and had Herman cut it to 14.5" with a Decelerator 1"-thick pad, and had him clean and lubricate the locks while he was at it.

I should have just added a 1" Decelerator pad, for 15.5" LOP.
Now I have to add the slip-on, velcro-fastening, leather Galco pad with an insert to get 15.5",
but it is very comfortable for shirt sleeve shooting with slip-on pad, over the Decelerator.
Take off the pad if cold-weather jacket worn.

Same way I make a cold weather 13.5" LOP factory bolt action into a 14.5" LOP bolt action for tee-shirt shooting.
Seems pretty universal to have a longer LOP with double rifle than with bolt action.

Good luck finding the Yoda of stock measurements, and may The Force be with you. tu2

Thanks all- You would sure think that a gun/show as big as the NRA Convention would have someone there that knows how to do this...

I can't until I completely decide Chris Big Grin.
I do currently have a Merkel .470 that I will be taking to Australia in June, but obviously not what I am looking to order...let's just say I guess I will be joining the army...

My doubles tend to be .75 inches longer than my bolt rifles.

Yes, doubles have longer LOPs than bolts as the measurement is to the front trigger, which is always farther forward than a bolt action rifle trigger. But in reality, the actual stock is not much if any, longer. Maybe a little. Might be best to measure from the grip to butt, but that is not always reliable either. If you don't have anyone who can measure you for a double rifle, or don't have one to use as a gauge; well, a lot depends on not only your arm length but your build, neck, etc.

Tim, Serious Trap and Sporting clays shooters are verypicky about stock fit.
Check at a local club or post a request a TRAPSHOOTER.COM for your nearest stock maker.
Lots of shooters in OH and IN so you should find someone nearby.

Tim,

Standard or altered Merkel stock dimensions on your 470 NE?
Take it with you when you find that stockmaker in OH or IN and let them critique the way that fits you too,
could be informative, helpful, interesting ...
