lee440450 #2 Loads w/R15 help
Looking for advice from those with a 450 #2 that have used Re 15 with 480-500 gr, bullets and 350's. My rifle is regulated for the 80 gr Cordite load. Using the 1.19 formula comes out to 95 gr of R15, I'll start a bit lower, but wanted some real world feedback from those who have used it in this caliber. I have used R15 for years in my 450/400 and hope it will work well in my new/old rifle. Thanks! Lee.

cal pappasShould work just fine. I've been shooting and hunting with my Lang 450 no2 for 20+ years. I prefer 4831 and 105 grains but your RL will work fine. I will be selling six pounds of RL 15 at the gun show this weekend as 4831 has worked so well for me since the 1990s.

bobcfound this in search. New rifle? Here's what I found:I shoot a Champlin Famars in 450 # 2. If I remember correctly it was started in 1989 and completed in 1991. Articulated trigger and ejectors Gold inlaid rear sight and just dot the i in the express sight. Which is 120 degrees wide angle. I have shot Hornady solids, softs, woodleighs, barne's TSX, northfork cup points. All bullets went from 450 to 480 to 500gr Using RL-15 shooting 86,88, 89 grains of power and 5 grains of filler.
The harmonics in my gun are unique I shoot all the loads with the above charges and bullets and no tweeking required. Shot every thing from groundhogs to elephants with it. Even a black mamba.

bobcfrom tony black post:I too have a British double in 450 No2.
The 450 No2 case is so large that no matter what powder you use you must use filler.
I have good loads with IMR 3031, IMR4831 and RL 15.
My favorite powder with the 450, 480 and 500 gr bullets is RL 15. I use a foam plug cut out with a 50 BMG case. Dacron poly will also work. Which ever filler you use it must be compressed.
I use 89 grains of RL 15 with the 450 North Forks, and 88 grains with 480 Woodleighs, Soft and Solid, and 500gr Swift A Frames, 500gr Hornady Soft and 500gr Hornady old style Solids.
With 350 gr Hornady RN I use 81 gr of IMR 3031, with filler of course.

RustyDon't forget you can use Norma 203B as well. I suggest a foam plug to hold the powder against the primer. I can send you a few.

lee440I am pretty sure that both Tony and Mikes guns were 75 gr. regulated guns, mine is an 80 gr. I finally got to take it to the range yesterday and it showed promise with a 95gr. R-15, 480 Woodleigh, but it really liked that load with a 350 gr hard cast gas check bullet. When I have more time for the range, I will try some more loads. Thanks for the replies! Lee.

AtkinsonI agree all is well, especially with Cals post..
I will add one thing for what its worth, I found recoil was less with RL-15 and 4350 than 4831 in all doubles that I shot, how much probably depends on the shooter, neither bothered me but senced it, but I shot a good deal and hunted a lot back in the day and recoil is personal. It might be a factor with some..My guns were more accurate with 4831 and I used the old 4350 DATA 4831 powder of WW2..still do..

RockdocI tend to get better results with RE15 in 500/450 and 375 Flanged Mag as I did also with my 500 3 1/4” than H4350. Using a Kynoch wad above .400.
Happy shooting.

WildcatterThat 1.19x multiplier with RL15 yields me 2230fps average from my 470 with 25.5” barrels. In other words, it’s too much of a good thing. Don’t even think of trying that multiplier with the 577 and 600. You will be in the upper 40,000s or lower 50,000s psi. Try a 1.1x multiplier and work up to regulation in your rifle.
Shoot the largest caliber you can shoot well, and practice, practice, practice.
I have a 450#2 made by WR&Co back in 1905. I use North Fork 500 gr Softs over 92.0 gr of RL15 and get approximately 2,120 FPS. I also load Swift A Frames 500 gr over 93.5 gr of RL15 and am just shy of the 2,100 FPS mark. To take up extra case volume I use a 3/4” light foam plug that I cut using a 450#2 case body that is cut in half and has sharpened edges. No pressure signs in my rifle. Hope this helps.
