Gents: Shortly I will be selling my 1890s vintage Hughes 4-bore double. I will have it, and my .600 Wilkes, at the Dallas and Reno Safari Club shows in January. The Hughes is a 22-pound double and is a trip to shoot. Photos can be seen on my website: calpappas.com Also on the site see lots of good double rifles, bore rifles, africa stuff including over 100 old magazine articles from the 1950-60s on double rifles, reloading, and African hunting. I hope you enjoy the site and pics of the 4-bore and see information on my new book on the .600 nitro express.

Cal

CP,

I've enjoyed your site and I am a huge enthusiast of old

UK built 600 NE D/R's. I like the 4 bores very much too, but

I do not think I'd be brave enough to light one up, they're

just so, SO BIG ! Bigger than 4 bore to me is beyond human

boundries. How far are you from Wasilla, Ak.? I have a first

cousin there with his family.

Cal's 4 bore is a beautiful rifle! I also read his book on the 600 and can highly recommend it!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I am going to beg my cousin to get on this forum and perhaps you and he

could become aquainted.

Mr. Pappas,

Just visited your website for the first time, and I was taken aback a such a wonderful array of trophy animals. I came into to school today early to get some papers graded to return to the students, but to hell with that, I can't quite quit oogling some of those Buffalos. Thanks man, I really appreciate that. It is a most spectacular way to start my day.

Hello gentlemen:
I only check the site every few days as there is lots to do here. It's -35 the last two days and I'm back to teaching school--covering for a maternity leave (I'm a retired teacher).

bkhall: I was a teacher for 26 years. Thanks for the kind words on about my site. My email is pappas@mtaonline.net if you'd like to discuss Africa or double rifles outside of the forum.

bigfivejack: I'm about 50 miles north--between Willow and Talkeetna actually. If you ever visit your cousin give me a call (I'm in the book). As to shooting a 4, no worries if you can handle some of the modern big bores such as a .458 or a .460. The recoil is harsh but not a bad as the sensationalist stories to interest readers. Look at my website and find the back cover of my new book on the .600 nitro and read about all the nonsense folks have written about the .600. Most is not true due to poor research or outright lies.

Brett: Thanks for the kind words about my .600 book and I'm pleased you enjoy it. I'd love to sign it for you the next time we meet. Remember the summer double rifle shoots at my cabin. And, keep talking up my 4-bore as I do want to sell it. There were about 50 of them made in the old days so they are more rare than the .600s.
