Which primer do you use or would you recomend for a .450/400 NE 3 inch? I think that I've seen that many of you use Federal magnum rifle primers. I'm reching the finish line on getting a realoading setup together (I've never done this before) and primers may be the last piece of the puzzle.

Scrolling through Midway USA the CCI and Federal Magnum Rifle primers are out of stock. but I do see:

Winchester Large Magnum Rifle Primers #8-1/2M
Remington Large Rifle Magnum Primers #9-1/2M
TulAmmo Large Magnum Rifle Primers

Are any of these viable options?

I use only Federal 215 large magnum primers.

However for the 450/400 3" i would imagine the Winchester magnum LR primer would be ok.

Good luck. Chris

+1
I use Fed 215 for all my double rifle cartridges, but the other magnum primers should also work.

A friend of mine who also posts here knows some enginners at Federal and their primer break point between magnum and non-magnum primer usage is 80 grains of powder.

Even though I prefer Federal 215's for my Nitro Express cartridges most any magnum primer will work. I've used a lot of Winchester and Mag Tec plus Wolfs. I don't really like the Tula but it could just be the batch I have. Someone did a flame test on primers and the Remingtons looked really good. Michael458 and myself did some primer tests and he has data on his B&M site.

The main thing with big cases is to be sure and have powder tight(compressed) no loose shaking powder. This helps with ignition and solves most of the primer issues.

I use CCI magnum primers on my 450-400 as it was regulated with those primers and there was a pronounced difference of horizontal/vertical impact when using Fed. 215's. This is the only time I have noticed a difference in regulation as I use Fed 215's in all other doubles and heavy bolt guns.

Like Dutch, I use CCI 250's for my 450/400 and 458. Stepped up to Fed 215s for my 500 due to the extra case capacity\volume.

A-Square load manual used the CCI-250 in everything through 577 T.rex and 600 NE.
I have heard that the Winchester WLRM is hotter than the F-215 and GM215M twins.
It would be my substitute for the unobtainable "F-216."

I avoid Remington primers due to early life experience with harder cups on the Remington primers.

CCI-250
F-215/GM215M
WLRM

For tweaking a load: Any of those will do for me, in a Ruger No.1 450/400 3", or a Merkel 470 NE.
