He's interested in a deer caliber sized double, either o/u or s/s. "Thinks he prefers the o/u but willing to consider either. Pretty sure he wants double triggers". Mentioned possibility of a Krieghoff, or something in that range...

If you have anything that might appeal, I'll put you in touch.

Good hunting,

If it was my friend, I would tell him that he wants a side by side, which are the only real double rifles. Over/unders, just happen to have two barrels...yuck.
As you know, the most popular small caliber DR is the Chapuis; he needs to do some research.

Just for the reason of white tail deer, I bought a mate a V-C double in 7mm flanged (.275 Rigby flanged). It will shoot 1 1/2 to 2" at 100 yards, no recoil, and perfect for deer.

Why not a 9,3x74R, which can take game of any size.

Like Andre, I would recommend the 9.3x74 or the .375 Fl Mag. A used Merkel 140A in 9.3x74 would be a good start

Aaron Little could probably quickly get a nice .375FM put together for you at a good price based on a strong German shotgun action.

The Chapuis's are nice guns, but don't fit me well personally, and some have to be re-regulated. But those issues can be with any DR.

A PM to Aaron Little might be worth the effort.

All,

Thanks for the comments - won't try addressing all, but will make a few general clarifications... He definitely isn't interested in anything in the 9.3x74 and up arena. He's seen me shoot mine and had no interest in even trying a shot. He's also attuned to the reloading nuances I've gone through with three doubles and has no interest in getting into that.

Actually I didn't take the idea very seriously until he mentioned it again this weekend because he's just started shooting rifles about three years ago - I put him on the three he now owns. He had the two trigger requirement in mind when the topic first came up. He has done a ton of shotgun shooting including sxs double triggers. The past few days I've sent him a few links from guns international including some Chapuis possibilities. The Zoli just noted could be about right, and I'll get that forwarded too.

Good hunting,

I would encourage him to consider a classic BPE rifle.
Loaded NfB, a 450 is just about the perfect under 200yd deer rifle IMO.

That's my next move, I think....getting an old 577 BP or NFB rifle and doing Africa with it. Looks like the 5787 can be driven fast enough to be capable as a DGR.

David Powell told me of an elephant shot with an Alex Henry 500BPE with banded solids that went through the heart and lodged in the off front leg at BP velocity. Deader than last year's Christmas tree.
I sometimes think that the high speeds of the nitro express is needed to get the solidly built bullets to perform similarly to a soft or cast bullet at a lower velocity.

High speed and Nitro Express are not compatible for the most part.
