Hello everybody,
i am planning to have a double rifle build for me by a local gunsmith. Now i am thinking about the calibre. I could get both of the above mentioned calibres. What would you choose? I am planing to use the rifle mainly for buffalo, plainsgame and leopard and maybe on elephant? Or which other calibres could you recommend? I have to use factory availabil ammunition as i am a non reloader. Who has experiences with douple rifes in .458 Win Mag?

Cheers

Florian

it will depends on how much big cal rifles you have or haven't shot to make your choise. If you can try shooting the different cal's to give you a better idea it would help. I would think a 450-400NE,450NE,470NE or if you are going to hunt elephant more than once go up to a 500NE(great fun to shoot in my book)and hornedy and a few others sell factory ammo for these Cool

Thank you for the answer. I have allready a Take Down rifle in .375 H&H Mag with a second barrel in .458 Lott and i have a Take Down rifle in .416 Rigby. These are all ok for me to shoot. I do not need the new rifle its more a i want the rifle

I wouldn't get a double in .458 win mag. There are other rimmed .458 cartridges to choose from like the .450 3.25", .450 no.2, and .500/450 3.25" that work much better in a break action rifle. As for .450/400 or .500/416 no question I'm going with a .450/400, but only because I'm a traditionalist and that's a traditional cartridge with history. As for function? .450/400 with a 400 grain bullet going 2150fps vs .500/416 with a 400 grain bullet doing 2300fps. Seems like a wash to me.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

If you are not a handloader, I would pick the 450/400. Between the two, I think the 500/416 is the better cartridge, kind of a modern 450/400 but the 450/400 will do everything you need to do and factory ammo is more readily available.

I should qualify my statement to be true in the U.S. I am quite ignorant of ammo availability in Germany and don't want to imply otherwise.

Another possibility is the 450 NE! Hornady as well as others have this factory loaded.

Ammo availability is a good thing if you are not a reloader,
but me I would go for the 500/416 if buff and elephant are on the menu, there are no flies on the 400 but,the edge goes to the 500/416 for power.

The 500/416 caliber is no longer available. Folks heard that Bal was looking for one, and they all disappeared. :-)

I've decided on the .450/400 for my first double based on the many recomendations on it, that its good on that eventual buffalo trip(s), a possible tuskless someday, seems to be a caliber that I would still be able shoot when I'm old and frail (a .600 at age 85 might be risky...) and that it seems like it would be fun to use on the tiny Blacktail Mule Deer in California (home). That I've already bought 6 boxes of Hornady fodder seems to finalize my decision.... Now thats a commitment, buying the ammo before I've even bought the gun! Smiler

My pick would be the 450/400NE 3 inch! That is,IMO, one of the best all around chamberings for a double rifle! Like the 375H&H the 450/400 just seems to do everything very well.

Though the various 416s are all very good cartridges, I have never been able to warm up to any of them. No reason other than a personal choice!
