Where is everybody getting these? I have been using dacron but must confess that the "pillow fight aftermath" look leaves much to be desired. Thanks.

You can e-mail Kynoch directly (kynamco@aol.com) and they will send some to you. Trader Keith's (www.traderkeith.com) also carries them.

I have several sheets of the foam here at my house in Houston.
Trying to get machine time to make the tool steel cutters for the 400-500 size.

Mike all I need is an address and I'll send ya some.

Rusty: I was glad to meet you on the DRSS Hunt in Brady,TX and look for ward to going in January. I was hoping if I could buy some foam fillers to use in both my 45-70 Mauser Bolt and a Ruger #3 45-70 and .470 NE I just bought. I can't seem to get any #2 Kynock here in the states. Please advise if you have some and what the cost will be. Thanks in advance..Robert Studen

Mike, I get mine from Trader Keith's he seems to always have them in stock. #2's are what you need for the 500 and #3's for the 505. I cut mine in half for the loads I use with R-15.

Dirk: Thanks for the info. I called them a few days ago and they ar all out of #2's and it will be about 3-4 weeks before they get any back in. It's on order. I was hoping for a quick fix until the ship comes in. Thanks again

I have sent a inquiry as I have never had a chance to handle one of the foam wads and want to see what kind of foam they are made from. I have several density’s of foam but want to duplicate the originals as close as possible.
Dirk isn’t that the way it goes some times……

My foam guy said the Kynoch wads were a polyurethane foam. I cut the #3 with a 9/16 punch, the #2 with a 11/16 punch. The punches are standard arch type punches available from most industrial hardware stores.

I purchased a bunch of foam sheets and BobC found a punch set that I can, with a rubber mallet and a wood backer punch out plugs in a hurry!

Rusty: Where can I buy the sheets of foam to make 45-70 and .470NE loads fillers. What weight should they be when finished. I want to make #2 style fillers. What thickness should the material be and proper cutter size to get for "cookie cutting" the fillers. Thanks in advance.

What size are y'all using for your 450/400s - Size 1 is .300 to .400 and Size 2 is .400 to .500?

I took an old steel golf club shaft, cut it about 6" long from the butt (grip) end and slightly beveled (sharpened) it. It is .62" in diameter and REAL thin-walled. A couple of quick twists in the chosen foam...presto and perfect foam wad.
And yes....among my other talents....I am a pretty fair golfer Big Grin.

Rusty,
Use a spent case, sharpened with a deburring tool on on the wifes bread board, wack it with a hammer and presto a correct foam plug..Do it in the closet so she doesn't catch you at it....

A 45-70 case works as well, maybe better.

Can some one tell me the thickness of the foam fillers your finished product with the "cookie cutter" method will be and approx weight in grains I should expect. Every body on the forum has wonderful ideas as to the size in diameter, but unless I missed the page the thickness and weight was on. I don't have a clue. Thanks in advance. Robert Studen

One inch thick. Weight not critical. Foam wad should be a little larger in diameter than the case.

I have used 3 different densitys/thickness of foam/

I cut them out with a sharpened [with a chamfer tool] 50 BMG case.

As long as the foam is of larger diameter than the inside of your case, and is compressed between the bullet and powder you will be ok.

I've always been curious about these fillers... Don;t they partially melt and leave goo in the bore? I'm plebeian when it comes to DR reloading but I would think 'wadding' other than a fairly stout cotton would melt a bit.

Show me the light...

You want the foam to be long enough to be compressed by the bullet against ther powder.

Baxter
I have recovered after firing, all 3 of ther different types of foam that I have used.

None have shown any signs of melting, which actually did suprise me.

Also I can detect no foam residue in the bbls.

Mike,
Take a case with powder in it and tuck the DACRON in it with a unsharpened wood pencil or dowl rod until it is packed lightly snug half way up the neck, then weigh the DACRON and you have your load, all the wads will weigh the same from then on as you have established your needed weight..The bullet will pack it some more and it should come out on the ground upon firing, in a nice clean round plug...Tell C hello.
