Assuming that I use the bullet weight the rifle is regulated with, would Trail boss powder and that "regulate?" Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! DRSS, double owner-shooter since 1983, O/U .30-06 Browning Continental set.

Don't know if TB will regulate. If you want reduced loads, try the 75% rule. Same powder charge and 75% of the original bullet weight. This should provide acceptable accuracy. The 75% rule in reverse (same bullet weight and 75% powder charge) does not seem to provide as good of accuracy. _______________________________ Cal Pappas, Willow, Alaska www.CalPappas.com www.CalPappas.blogspot.com 1994 Zimbabwe 1997 Zimbabwe 1998 Zimbabwe 1999 Zimbabwe 1999 Namibia, Botswana, Zambia--vacation 2000 Australia 2002 South Africa 2003 South Africa 2003 Zimbabwe 2005 South Africa 2005 Zimbabwe 2006 Tanzania 2006 Zimbabwe--vacation 2007 Zimbabwe--vacation 2008 Zimbabwe 2012 Australia 2013 South Africa 2013 Zimbabwe 2013 Australia 2016 Zimbabwe 2017 Zimbabwe 2018 South Africa 2018 Zimbabwe--vacation 2019 South Africa 2019 Botswana 2019 Zimbabwe vacation 2021 South Africa 2021 South Africa (2nd hunt a month later) ______________________________

As cal stated the 75% rule works for many, but it will just change the weight of the bullet, the velocity will pretty much stay the same or increase with reduced bullet weight, this has been my experience in several big bore DR'S,470,458 & 500/416,however if you want to reduce loads as in reducing the velocity?that can also be achieved,I have only done this once in a 470 NE,Butch Searcy developed loads with 5744 for that caliber,it was 500 gr bullets going about 1400 fps,my rifle did regulate but shot shot lower at @50 yrds, the bullets were cast,I never used that load to hunt anything but it was fun to shoot & I imagine it would have worked well on deer, hogs, etc, for my hunting needs when I hunt smaller game? I just use reduced bullet weights that shoot to the sights with full or similar powder charge. DRSS

I love using TB in single barrel rifles but have yet to get a double to regulate using it. What Cal said. DRSS

Thanks Cal for the 75% concept, I'll have to give that a try. The rifle is a Browning Continental, .30-06. Currently regulated with 200 grain bullets, so 150's would be a return to original regulation if not velocity. Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! Cal and all, I tried a variant with my Simson Suhl .405 DR which is regulated with 300 grain Hornady bullets and 300 grain Woodie bullets at 2250 fps. I wanted a 400 grain bullet, so I used the Woodleigh Weldcore 400 grain .411 bullet that shoots so well in my Winchester 1895 .405 at 2100 fps. The same powder charge was used that provided 2100 fps in my 1885 and it also regulated, not so one-hole tightly as the 300 grain at 2250 fps, but well enough for hunting big game. I have yet to use this load/DR combo on game, but hope to soon. Maybe right after I break in my Beretta 45-90 DR on game? Maybe on the same trip? Been a fan of both the 75% rule and reduced loads using Trail Boss or 5744 both have their place. the 75% rule will give you pretty much POA/POI on top of the same load as your hunting load. the recoil feels less but snappier...the reduced loads gives you a load that is a fraction of the full power load's recoil enabling you to shoot your rifle after your full power loads re-establishing good muscle memory and shooting technique using the same gun, trigger and sights.. Do the reduced loads shoot to same POA/POI "NO" inside of 50yards a few inches low but if the grouping is there is does not matter. With my 450NE I flip up the 200yrd leaver and I am on target.. In my 450NE and my 458 Lott I have shot Cast and Jacketed bullets over both Trail Boss and 5744 the formula is easy to apply and I think the benefits are many..

My Searcy 470 regulated with 5744 as did my Jefferys 450-400..that is the 75% formula for that wherein the POI is the same with a max hunting load that shoots the same POI as the mild 5744 load at very mild velocity.. I used those 5744 loads to shoot meat in Tanzania, pigs and Javalina in So. Texas, fun load near void of recoil.. Hello 308Sako, I have some experience with reduced loads with several of my Double Rifles. Below are some pictures of targets with my 600ne and my 700ne Double rifles. I used this same 75% velocity approach for other calibers of 416 and above. All worked but I don't have the comparison target to show, only recorded groups in my data ledger. I use the following 75% rule: 75% bullet weight with max powder charge .... or full bullet weight with 75% "Velocity" (not powder weight) I used mostly IMR4198 and AA5744 to develop reduced loads. I chronograph every shot and record the data. This worked so well that my 700ne was actually regulated by Aaron Little with the 75% load, and as you can see the full velocity load printed into the same group. The 75% rule was designed for doubles as I understand it..but may work in some bolt guns, don't know..However with a bolt gun I would just use starting loads in the books and be careful about cutting the slow burning powders they are claimed to cause some real problems just like an over max load??? or so its said and seems to be accepted by most..
