I've read that loads with lead cast bullets (450-525 grains) in the 500NE using charges of H-4895 or IMR-4895 at 60-70% of full-power loads make good practice loads. I've been unable to turn up any 4895 data for the 500NE. I'm trying to load up some practice rounds with the powder I have on hand while waiting for some 5744 and Trail Boss. Anyone with experience using either of the 4895s in the 500NE?

Not me. I used cast bullets and 5744 a couple of times but 5744 is so darn dirty it was rotal pain to clean the rifle. I just stick with 96-99 grains of RL15, 1/2 Kynoch wad, 500 grain Woodleigh. Mike

That's odd. AA5744 is not dirty at all in my .470 NE. "This ain't Dodge City and you ain't Bill Hickok. "

No experience with 5744 yet myself but have read that the old lots were very dirty but the new formulation since it was brought back burns much cleaner. We'll see. Thanks for the info. I'm trying to avoid wads and to get an early start on shooting practice.

Why avoid wads? I used to have the same thoughts about wads, now I'll not shot my 500 without using R-15 with half wad full loads and full wad with plinking loads. The 450 grain Woodies are a great plinking bullet at 1950 fps. The 5744 powder is a dirty powder, look down the bores after you shoot it.
