In my Chapuis I use 65gr of IMR 4831 with 286 Woodleigh Softs and Solids, Nosler Partitions, and 285gr Hawk bullets with the .035 jkt. All of these bullets hit lose enouh together to 200 yards that I use them with no sight changes. The Nosler Partitions do hit higher at 300 yards due to their pointed shape. I have killed all manner of game with these bullets from beaver and coyotes, to deer, pigs and black bear, to a bunch of African plains game to giraffe, cape buff and elephant. Thanks for the offer, mine does about 6 inches at a 100 with them, Just shoot them and save the brass for reloading. DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Thanks for the info, I try the load with the partions. NF told me to use the barnes tsx loads to start with their rounds, I see what they list for h4831. Thanks JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

JD Just so you know Chapuis recommends against using Barns X bullets in their doubles. A fella in Australia did and it broke the solder between he barrels. He sent his Chapuis back to France and they fixed it. The same thing happened again, and they fixed it again, but when the contacted him, and he told them what bullet he was shooting, they told him NOT to shoot them any more. His posts are here on AR... Let me clear that up. NF told me to use the same load data that barnes recomends for the TSX, they did not suggest useing a competer's bullets, just the data as a starting point. I am hopeing I can get a load for their softs and cup points to shoot well together. Then I know I am good for what ever walks out on me while we are stalking the stream banks or walks into camp. Lets say the NF don't work out ,would your second choice be the partations or the 320 woodleighs? JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

I have found that between 53-55 grs of RL15 works well for me with 286 gr bullets. Ones I have tried are: TSX, Woodleigh softs, Partition, Northfork Softs and A-Square solids. As usual, consult your loading manuals and work up.

The rain here is killing me, loading and working up loads outside at the range is ruff. So far 55 grs of varget and 286 nosler seem to shoot well at 50, with 65grs of H 4831 and 320 woodlieghs a close second. I just got the NF softs in the mail. I think RL 15 and varget will be my starting point. I had a heavy 30 mm Meotia scope on it and the rifle just seemed touchy. the left barrrel is very accurate and shooting just a little high. It would shoot side by side a inch or two apart, then throw the next two at 10 and 5 o'clock about 4 inches apart. Thats from my standing rest or from a bench resting my hand only, and my right elbow. I got both 1" and 30MM rings. I changed to a 1" 1.5x5 leo at 17 oz and to a hunting style 4-moa aim point in the 30 mm rings. I will do work up with the scope sight in the aim point and see what works the best. I am hopeing that that will make the rifle more forgiving. JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

If the NF's do not work out then I would try the 286gr Paartition's, or the 286gr Woodleigh's. I have killed a lot of game with these 2 softs and they both performed perfectly. On my trips to Zim I have shot a lot of impala and a lot of zebras [as I was using them for cat bait]with both of tese bullets. I also killed my biggest cape buff to date, with one 286 Woodleigh Soft fired frontal chest. He was down and dead in 40 yards. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I've shot TSX bullets in my doubles now for years with no problems. The issue was with the old X bullet without the grooves. TSX are fine. If you are concerned with barrel strain, take a look at all the data produced by Michael 458 on the "Double Rifle Bullet of the Future" thread. Lots of good objective, repeatable information there. Not opinion, just side by side comparisons. The TSX produces significantly less barrel strain than the Woodleigh FMJ, the Hornady DGX, or Hornady DGS. No one questions those bullets yet they are the three hardest bullets on double rifle barrels being produced today. There is no need to rely on "I know a guy who knows a guy, who knows a guy who had a problem one time" anymore. The data is there for all to read. My Chapuis UGEX shoots the 286gr TSX without any problems. That is, as long as the scope is off. Put the scope on (1.25X4 Trijicon) and I cannot keep them from crossing. Doesn't matter how much I slow them down, they just won't regulate with the scope on. I'm shooting the CEB bullets in my 9.3X74 Chapuis with the scope. My current load is 53grs of IMR 4064 with a small amount of polyester filler. This load works for both the 286gr solid and 255gr non-con. I make no statement here about the suitability of this load in anyone's rifle other than my own. However, this load did come from the Barnes Reloading Manual #4 for the 286 TSX bullets. One word of caution however, several folks here on AR have these guns. Some have reported no issues with scoping them and then you have others at the far end of the scale like myself that went through about 15 load combinations before getting the rifle to shoot with the scope. What that means to me is that you can't expect to just take my load, or anyone else's for that matter and expect it to regulate in your rifle. I hope you get it all worked out prior to you hunt JD. And I hope you have a great hunt as well!! Black Bear / Grizz / or Brownies ??

Todd I will be hunting black bear. I had a 30mm meotia on the rifle and took it off. I have a 1.5x5 leo on it now and a aim point for back up. The rifle was a little cranky with the heavy scope, I will find out today, if it will work better with a lighter scope. JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Hi JD, Yea, it seems that the little Chapuis can be finicky with a scope, especially a heavy one. I was just about to give up on the Trijicon and go with a holographic sight when I stumbled across the load that worked for me. Good luck on getting it dialed in and good luck on your hunt. Let us know how the hunt goes!
