Year's First Alaska Double Shoot
11 March 2014, 04:21
cal pappasYear's First Alaska Double Shoot
Gents:
The year's first Alaska double rifle shoot will be at the Birchwood range on May 31 10-3. We will have lots of doubles there and a few single barreled arms in keeping with Affirmative Action regulations. We will all chip in a few $ to Rob as he booked the range for a 200$ fee. I will supply the grill and send out a food list so we can all have burgers, dogs, chips, soft drinks, etc…
I don't know what the others will bring, but I will cart along my .450-400, .450 no2, .500, .600, 8-bore, and 4-bore. Yesterday I bought an Alex Henry 8-bore single barrel harpoon gun that has rifle sights and can shoot 8-bore cartridges. If it is up and running I will haul it down there, too. Weighs 23 pounds and the barrel is 2" diameter at the breech!
Many of you mates have joined me for shoots in the past and if any gents from the lower 48 have some air miles and would like to spend a long weekend in AK shooting and visiting some nice collections you are welcome.
We will also book the range for the end of June and the end of July when we are all there on the 31st and if there is interest.
Cheers,
Cal

AkshooterI'll try but that's getting into my super busy season. I know you guys think I'm avoiding the DR shoots because I never show up but not because I don't want to be there. Maybe I can get someone to fill in for the morning if I can get out of there by 3:00.

That Lang does not have 28" barrels by any chance does it?

Matt MooreCal, I don't think we have done a great job of rolling out the welcome mat for Shootawhey to attend a shoot at Birchwood.
Besides, I have seen Mike shoot his Searcy and he shoots it well. Mike's Searcy has NO bondo, superglue, tapped out front sights, dremeled barrels, or dents in the barrels where it hit him in the head during a late night fondling/gun sholdering session.
Cheers,
Matt

Omnivorous_BobI should have my son's Daisy BB and 25-20 DRs, 30-06, maybe a 318, 8-bore, 10-bore doubles, a single 4-bore and a 577 howdah. In the non-DR but still British spirit I'll also bring my Sten MKIIS and DeLisle carbine replica.
If you're not a member of Birchwood you can shoot on this range without paying the normal $20 fee since we're renting it. If you want to shoot on any others you have to pay the fee, so there's no excuse to not come out and join us!

Matt MooreI thought I would make a comment here to get this thread moved to the top.
My dad's health is declining quickly as he is 93. I will be heading out this weekend to spend some time together.
Have a great shoot and everyone behave. Make sure you don't get any ammo confusion going on when you are having all that fun.
Take a lot if pictures and I will enjoy viewing them while in the lower 48.

cal pappasGents:
Rain, poor turnout, and only one brought a camera. Nothing much to write of.
Todd's .375 2 1/2" was made for the Maharaja of Patiala. Nice to have a history of a fine double.
Of course, Rob's Thompson shot well.
And, Rob brought his guns.
Most of my guns were put away, but from left is a .450 no2, .450-400, 4-bore, .475 no2. Scott's .500 Gibbs is to the right.
Rumor has it Brett will give up doctoring and become a cook at McDonlads. He makes excellent burgers!
My .600 always draws attention and a few shot it.
The big Huges 4-bore also gets a crowd. Todd Kilby, who took these photos posted here, shot the 4 and was amazed by its accuracy. Charge was 100 grains of Blue Dot and a 1400-grain ball. Velocity was about 1500 fps.
A pair from the 4-bore stopped this lion.
Next shoot is July 19 at the Su Valley range, mile 95 of the Parks (about 7 miles north of my place).
Cheers,
Cal
