Admiral,

You have a beautiful rifle there. I'm sure you will put it to good use. Really like the barrel length, the wood and engraving is stunning obviously, but the most beautiful picture by far was that target. You've got a real winner.

Congrats Admiral - a beauty of a double. I must say that this just make me more impatient waiting for my VC 450 NE that is under production in France.

Most impressing that target. Must be a hell of a satisfaction knowing that your rifle is so accurate. I sure hope that mine will turn out the same tu2

Yes - it is a semi beavertail. I do not remember specifying a length when I ordered the rifle.

You say that the rifle is fitted with a plate for the Doctor Red Point ? Tried that yet ? Asking since my VC will be fitted the same way and sighted/targeted with the Doctor delivered from Jerome & Co.

I shot the rifle with the Docter Red Dot installed today, and it shot very well. I am still working up loads, so I will continue to use it at the 50 yard range when doing so. The rifle was regulated with Hornady factory ammo, so I took it down to the 100 yard line to see if I could hit the 12" square steel target offhand. I managed to get 3 hits out of 4 shots, so I was very happy. The Red Dot sight works, and I guess in my next trip to the range I will find out how well the mount holds zero.

Great to hear ! Looking forward to the follow up report. Excited to hear about your experience with the Doctor. Larry Shores uses the same set up and he says he very satisfied with it Smiler

Cheers,

Jorge and Admiral, may I ask what kind of trigger weight you guys have on your VC 450 NE ?

I discussed this with Jerome when visiting the factory and test firing and I found the trigger weight to be rather heavy !

Moretn: I have no idea. Suffice to say it does not preclude me from shooting good groups with it and you can fire either barrel without it doubling on you. j

Range Report - I went out to the range this morning to see if the picatinny mount on my Docter Optic Red Dot sight held zero after removal / reinstallation and also to see how bumping up my loads by one grain of H4831 would do. I am very happy with the results as the targets below demonstrate. The mount and Red Dot sight held zero perfectly, and the load of 99.0 gr of H4831 seems to be the winner for Woodleigh 480 gr softs and solids as well as for 450 gr North Fork Solids. Interestingly enough, the 450 NorthFork soft points shot much better with a load of 98.0 gr H4831.

Really nice shooting Admiral.

You say that 98 grain powder and 450 grain NF shoots even better ! Do you have a picture of that ?

What kind of outside temperatures did you have on the range ?

Morten

98 gr H4831 worked better ONLY with North Fork soft point bullets. 99 gr of H4831 worked better with everything else. I threw away the targets from last week when I was shooting 98 gr loads - sorry. Temperature at the range for the targets postd was about 70 deg F.

Excellent work, men.
With H4831 it won't matter much what the ambient temperature is.
Ditto the H4831 and H4831SC.
Same powder charge weight for both.
The H4831SC has only about 96% of volume of H4831 "Long Cut" so I suppose the old H4831 is
the better choice to fill the case with no filler used.

The credit for the work goes to Jorge - he was very generous in sending me the results of his load development, and it saved me a lot of time and a lot of expensive bullets (NorthFork)!

Yessir, all H-4831. I chose it over the others because of volume density (no filler needed), temperature stability and Hornady uses it in their factory loads.

Beautiful looking double and superb wood!

I am sure it will look much better balanced across the boss of an old buff rather than your deck and look forward to seeing the Africa report or pictures later in the year !

I bought an 8-pound jug of good ol' H4831 today.
I had been fretting over whether to switch to H4831SC.
ADI's AR2213 from Australia is relabeled as "H4831 Extreme" for sale here in USA.
Last time I looked it seems ADI only offers AR2213SC now, and may have discontinued the "Long Cut" version, AR2213.

I fear that H4831 may dry up in USA too, likewise being replaced by H4831SC. I hope not.
That is why I rushed out and bought the old-style H4831 "Long Cut" Extreme today,
under the influence of this thread. Wink
I use it in .416 Rigby, 470 NE, heavy-bullet .375 Weatherby loads, light-bullet loads in the .408 Chey-Tac, and sundry smaller caliber "ratguns."
Now I will be using it in the 450 NE.
Stocked up. tu2

jorge,
True that, for external ballistic results, grain for grain by weight,
at least within my Oehler 35P chronograph measurement error, in a .408 Chey-Tac.
I like lightly compressed loads with no filler.
Long Cut allows that more often than SC in some specific cases.
I do need an 8-pound jug of H4831 SC Extreme also,
for lightly compressed loads in other cases. tu2
