I took my nephew to McDonalds for lunch the other day. Our bill came to $4.25. So I handed the girl a $5 bill. Then I gave her a quarter. She tells me that I gave her too much money. I said, yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back. After a long look at the money, she went and got the manager, who asked me to repeat my request, I did so, and he handed me back my quarter and said "we're sorry, but we can not do that kind of thing.". He then proceeded to tell the young lady to give me my change. She then gave me a dollar and seventy-five cents back. Don't confuse them...

A few months ago I went to our local name brand hardware store and bought some things. The bill was $5.37. I gave the young teen girl at the register a $10 bill and 37 cents. She was totally confused, got out a scratch pad, and S-l-o-w-l-y subtracted 37 cents from $1.00. She opened the register and gave me $4.63 back. To see how far this would go, I told her she had short changed me, that I had given her a 15 dollar bill. She opened the cash drawer and actually handed me another $5. I gave it back, said I was mistaken, and left the store shaking my head. NRA Life Member DRSS-Claflin Chapter Mannlicher Collectors Assn KCCA IAA

Most of them ring in the amount and then the amount that is tendered, and then they still seem confused when the register tells them the amount that they are to give back to you. And these are the same folks that are campaigning for a $15.00 an hour minimum wage.

If they were paid a $15/hour minimum you wouldnt have all that nonsense about tipping - because you wouldnt need to any more . ________________________ Old enough to know better

No kidding...I bought a coke for $1.07 the other day. Gave the kid $2. He rang it in...the register displayed I was due 93 cents. he pulled out a couple of quarters, looked at them and put them back. pulled out a dime and nickel, and put THOSE back. Handed me a dollar and said 'have a nice day' Jeff

If you are up for a good time, try paying with a $2 bill or $1 coins (US currency).

This is because retailers no longer teach their employees "counting back" change. Instead they rely on electronic cash registers to calculate change for them. The problems arise when employees who don't know how to "count back" change are given an uneven amount. It confuses them so they try to make change in their head instead of entering the amount tendered into the register. I now make a habit of telling the employee to "enter it in the register and it will calculate the change" when I hand them an uneven amount. Ridiculously, some still will protest. .

muzza, don't know about down under, but in America tip is actually T.I.P. That stands for To Insure Promptness. We use it as a reward. You earn it here, it is not a right. Half of the young people working in restaurants are college students, working for spending money and to help with school costs. We tip them for being attentive to their customers. Or not. The other half are lower class (by choice, due to unwillngness to work to achieve any success) people who left school early because of drug usage, an unwillingness to learn discipline, or anything else beyond mastering enough basic skills to get a driver's license. They live a life of noisy despair and envy, of saving to get another tattoo, to buy drugs, or a tank of gas. They believe that government "owes" them a lifestyle on a level with people who earn their way in this world. If we raised the minimum wage to $50 an hour, it would only serve to get them better purity drugs. Nearly every time the government raises the minimum wage, be it the feds or some of the socialist states, business respond by raising their standards for job applicants, and/or laying off staff. Minimum wage is for people with minimum to zero job skills. It is designed to encourage people to increase their job skills and move on to a better job. Nobody buys a decent car or a home on minimum wage.

Sorry, you can't fix Stupidity by paying more, Or does that work in NZ ? But, the government keeps trying. P.S. I'ts not customary to tip at Mac Donalds. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. The problem you describe with American youth, their math skills, and work ethic, is why so many clerks at 7-11 are Somali, Pakistani, or Indian; and all the people taking care of your lawn are from Mexico or Central America.

Not me! My lawn maintenance guy is a retired state policeman. He retired, bought a Harley, and then found the bike purchase is just the tip of the iceberg. He does about ten a week in season, and that is his HD play money.
