In bear country, it is a good idea to wear small silver bells to warn bears of your approach.
It is also a good idea to carry pepper spray, in case you still surprise the bear, and need to defend yourself.
Hikers should also be on the lookout for bear faeces, as this is often the first warning of bears in the area.
Black bear faeces are generally smaller, smells of fish, and usually contains berries.
Grizzly bear faeces are quite large, smells like pepper, and often contains small silver bells.

Now that's funny! We get all kinds of cal-fruits up here every summer to pick huckleberries and mushrooms, the sporting goods stores sell out of pepper spray and bells, just love it.

Only problem is bears don't seem to like the beads, dreds and hairy armpits, but I always try to be neighborly and put some bacon in their backpacks when they aren't looking.
