I remember the drills for crawling under the desk + covering your head (like that will help in a nuclear attack).Also our gas masks + box of provisions by the door in preperation to head to the basement.I'm biased obviously but after my upbring I do NOT trust the Soviets.

I grew up in a target city so they did not even bother with any of that stuff in school.
I guess they figured at best we may be around to see a brilliant flash.

I remember a cartoon in Argosy or some other "mens mag" back in the late 50's early 60's where this naked couple in a hotel room is looking out the window to see a mushroom cloud + the guy says "I think we have enough time to order another pitcher of martinis."
