Without going into the details, my brother squelched me out of my earnings on a sports pool. So I have decided to get back at him. My brother is working in MN for the next two weeks so he asked me to sight in his rifle for him. I agreed, but in light of his current actions I am going to have a little fun with it.
He shoots a 300 win mag for deer hunting so instead of the normal 180 gr Grand slam's I replaced them with Hornady 110gr spire points. The other modification was to the powder. I decided to go a more 'traditional' route, black powder.
Went to the range yesterday and cited the gun in. The loads are quite pleasant to shoot, not like the heavy thud that your normally get. Plus, as an added perk, the nice plume of smoke that the gun produces.

Hope it's safe.

This sounds like the gag we played on a buddy duck hunting when he got a little presumptious about how great a shot he was. We pulled a 3 1/2'' 12 guage shell and emptied out all the shot and replaced it with goose down. When the birds came in, noone shot but him and there was an explosion of goose down, some of it smoldering. Needless to say, the birds flew on. I guess you had to be there.

I shot trap for a number of years. There were always one or two 2nd year shooters who would "hot" load beyond the legal limits to gain some slight advantage. We never called them on the chrono, but by the end of a hundred bird match, they usually had developed a major flinch, and significant bruising on the shooting shoulder.

This reads like even more fun...

it'll be in the 14-k area, make sure the b/p has some slight compression.
and don't be surprised if he brings home a deer.

my bro liked to swipe my reloads for duck hunting when he was younger.
i replaced most of the shot with glitter and sparkley beads.
the sparkly rainbow affect would have made ke$ha proud.

I have no doubt that it will kill a deer. I just cant wait to hear the reaction in the woods. Guess I will have to wait 8 more days.

We used to shoot in a skeet league, at night, when I worked a IBM. I loaded a 12 ga shell with 3 hole punch waste, and slipped it into the shell bag of a obnoxious windbag. Nice cloud of confetti, and a missed bird....

Black powder is quite corrosive compared to smokeless powder. That sure will be funny when he finds out the bore on his rifle is all pitted corroded and ruined.

When my son was over in the sandbox his Sgt. told him to clean her sidearm. He stripped it down to base metal + re holstered it.Next time she took it out it was a rust bucket.HA! Good lesson if she got it. NEVER delegate someone else to service your piece.

I realize this, we did a bore swab after each shot when sighting it in. Also, after the last shot I used copper killer to remove any copper fouling. Part of the problem when shooting copper jacketed bullets with BP is that the copper fouling covers the BP and so it corroeds. If he shoots somthing this weekend i will clean and re-sight in with regular bullets. Thanks for the concern though.

IT WORKED!!!!

Early Saturday morning I shot my deer so I decided to go over to my brother's stand to ask if he'd seen anything. Well, we were chatting away and a small buck runs out in front of us. He lined up the shot and POOF! It scared the crap out of him, almost dropped the gun. I am certain that everyone in a mile radius heard him yell out, "what the F#$*." I just laughed, couldn't help myself. Not knowing what had happened, he thought something blew up on the gun. I laughed harder. I finally had to explain to him that this was pay back and that he was shooting BP rounds.

He did get the deer though.

Couldn't help chuckling as I read that, I could see it in my minds eye.
Glad he got the deer though.
