I remember always carrying a pocket knife, and always having a gun in my truck during hunting season. Showing off a new gun in the parking lot after school was common. We had a math teacher that was a fanatical pheasant and quail hunter, we would bring guns and go hunting with him after school. Matter fact, I still hunt with him occasionally.

Hey, I'm not even THAT OLD, and things have changed. I remember shooting .22's on the junior high rifle team. Teacher's took us to the range after school. We all brought our guns to school with us.

In high school, the local gunsmith offered a "nightclass" on building muzzleloading firearms. We used the high school wood shop, and all built 50 cal muzzleloaders from barrel blanks, raw maple stock blanks (Planks) and asorted parts from the Dixie catalog. Complete guns were routinely left at the school between classes.

It is a sorry state we are now in...

In the Texas Hill Country, opening day of deer season was a holiday. No more. (it wasn't always a Saturday)

I know this account will be hard to believe for the younger readers here, but it is absolutley true. I know, because I was the shooter.

As I recall, it was 1959, my sophomore year at Mercer Island H. S., Mercer Island, Washington, sometimes referred to as "The Rock". An evening of music and various presentations was planned in the multi-purpose room for parents and friends. The chorus sang, the band played, and there were some skits. My friend D. G. (No, it doesn't stand for dangerous game, but it could have.) and I planned a humorous skit. I don't recall the details, but it ended with him throwing a rubber chicken from the raised stage into the audience as I blasted it using blanks from my great grandfather's Ithaca 12 ga double. The room was darkened, and the ceiling was concave, so the noise and flash were quite impressive.

We were probably spoken to harshly for not obtaining permission for the act, but I don't recall any serious disciplinary actions. Times have certainly changed, haven't they?
