Drag chain

Rich ElliottDrag chain
I'm going to fish the White River for trout. They use a drag chain instead of an anchor.
Can anyone tell me how to make one?

Hi Rich,
Sorry just noticed your post. Anyway, 3' of 1/2" chain is all you need. If you want to get fancy, you can stretch an old bicycle inner tube over it.
Another thing that works similar is an old cast iron window weight, either separately or snapped to the end of the chain if the current starts dragging the chain.

L. David KeithRich,
Before they dammed up the Little Tennessee River, we used to float pulling an innertube (2' long) filled with sand. If your going to use a chain drag, I'd do as Mark suggests and cover it with a bicycle tube. This helps avoid tight snags when your going over rock bottoms. The White can get swift if they're generating. Good fishing, David

Rich ElliottI found a 4 foot piece of 1/2" chain and just pulled it through a 3 1/2 foot piece of 2" flat water hose. It's slicker than a bike inner tube and tougher. Besides that it's agua- marine green and kinda purdy!
Thanks, Guys. I'll try it out tommorrow.

AvatarA fellow I know uses an old bowling ball that has been drilled to accept a rope.
Says it works pretty good, or so I'm tole.

Rich ElliottFilled our limit! Nothing big this trip. 4 ft of 1/2" was a bit of overkill. 2 ft was just right. About that bowling ball.... Then you'd know when you had a strike!

AvatarOh, you guys there use the drag anchor on your rig!!...OK....makes sense now....hahaha...
The bowling ball I wus thinking of is used as a drag anchor for the boat.
It will keep the prow of the boat pointed upstream into the current whilst still allowing you to fish as you drift backwards.

Rich ElliottAvatar,
Nah, you were right. I was making a pun.
The drag chain they are using in the White River in Arkasas is a 15 foot of rope tied to the front of a 20 ft jon boat. There is app 18" or either 3/8" or 1/2" chain tied on the other end and it does just what you said.
