There are several quick jump options. easiest (and it was mentioned here a while back) is the Go button on the top of this thread. It takes you to any forum.

As for taking you back to where you left off in the thread I don't see that as an option, if I find out how to do that I'll let you know.

Don,

Is this an older version of Infopop? It appears to be missing some of the better features like individual control over layout preferences and indexing back to where the new posts begin as many have suggested. And the overall appearance of the icons and layout look dated, IMHO.

Maybe we could upgrade to an older version. The only thing I've found better about this one is the search function.

Don,

You are right. I read up on the differences between UBB.Threads vs Eve Forums (UBB.x) and it appears that Infopop takes most of the load off the site adminstrators with Eve...clustered servers, automatic daily backups, data center, automatic software upgrade, etc..... In short, it should give you more time to hassle the Neo-cons. Big Grin

What surprises me is the design appears to be something 10 years old. Plus it is missing some of the features that make UBB.Threads so user friendly. They should fire their graphics designer. Unless you are able to customize the layout. I think I read it that you can from their website.

Oh well.....

The reason we went to Eve is due to the sheer size of our database and the overwhelming complaints of speed. Interland kept crashing, wouldn't allow access to mysql, etc. AND, our members did NOT want to have us cull posts. So we needed a system that archives old posts.

Eve gave us that. As for older looking graphics, nothing is perfect in this life.

So, we opted for speed as the overwhelming factor in determining what to do.

We also chose the most expensive plan which means we are on our own server there, not shared. That limits some of the flexibility in changing the code.

Don,

Maybe you could consider the "Professional" style sheet with larger text size instead of the "Desert of the Real." Just a suggestion.

I also liked being able to hit the hyperlink and email some of my AR friends. How about allowing members to turn off their email visability or allowing HTML in the signature line and we can create our own hyperlink to our email accounts. PMs can be cumbersome and might be impossible to access at work for some of our brothers.

Thanks for your consideration Don.

Anyone can put their email in their signature. HOWEVER, to allow an html script on any page to be run would really open up anyone's browser to someone putting a dangerous script out there.

Not wise. We just won't do it.

Don,

On the old system one would see a blinking "letter" when a PM was recieved. On EVE, I have not seen any "warning" that an unopened PM is waiting. Are my settings wrong, or do we just have to occationally check our mailbox???

Not everybody wants to exhibit their email addy's for one simple reason-Unwanted emails. I don't display my email nor will I ever. The guys I'm in contact with will PM me with info and I'll PM them back and give my email addy.

The notification of PMs on the site is not a feature of Eve. I miss it. However, I have PM notification turned on so I get an email.

Looks a lot better. Thanks!!

BTW, did you find a way to jump to the first unread message in a thread?

Also is there a way to increase the number of threads displayed on a page? With the amount of activity threads with posts just an hour or so old are getting relegated to page 2.

Again not big deals but a bit cumbersome.

Thanks!!

-Steve

Regarding where the forum returns you to on a thread, the old threads kept a cookie of where you last read. That meant that every time you opened a thread it did a search of the database to find the next post. Imagine 300 searches going on in a database of 800,000 records and know we know why our old board was slower than molasses.

NOW,

EVE just opens up the thread to the link (they call it breadcrumb) that shows up in the forum cataegory summary (usally the bottom of the thread if you click on the last post you see on the right hand side).

Faster all around. We moved here for speed, as the primary objective. That objective is met.

It may load faster, but if you open a thread that goes on for a bunch of pages you have to spend time remembering or searching or rereading until you find where you left off.

So I'm not convinced it's faster all around. But I never had much trouble with the speed of the old board (except for the search function).

Maybe it's peculiar to my 56K dial-up but 17 seconds to refresh this page doesn't seem 'fast' to me.

Over the years I have enjoyed the AR community, and plan on continuing that. Thanks, one and all, for that opportunity.

The ignore feature does not seem as needed as yet. What a thought! Keep it up!!!

Some streamlining and reduction of individualism would be expected to accomodate the search for speed, works for me. Thanks again!!!

Seems like lots of complaining going on here. Change is good, even when it seems bad. Be patient, let Don & Saeed get things going. Suggestions are great, but consider all the work they do for us, and how much effort went into the changeover. Then weigh that against the cost of your semi-annual subscription costs, and I think you will find that this new software works GREAT!!

I am not looking to start a war here, but remember that your words on here come across as harsher (sometimes) than how you mean them, and it can send a bad tone.

Also, as to the email thing... if you are publicly posting your email on any open forum, you are crazy, because mailbots WILL get you. And after a mailbot scans a BBS, then your spam can increase 2-20 times. That is precisely why PMs are the norm; you can PM someone and give them your email addy secretly. "Suspect" me all you want, but if you wish to validate my reply via my email addy, PM me and ask for it, but make sure to ask nicely...

And no, 17 second refresh is NOT fast... but what do you expect from a dial-up? That is not a board issue...

Ignoring a user? Look for his/her name on a post, and just don't read it. See info above as to how much you are paying to have to MANUALLY ignore someone...

Ok, I am off the soapbox for now. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but let's let the dust settle from the changeover before we judge too quickly. And remember, no matter how much they spend on BBS software, SOMEONE (in this case, several someones) will not be satisfied.

Keep up the good work, this is one of the best forums I have ever had the privilege to visit, everyone is professional, and I have learned a lot from it.

I can't imagine why out of 10,000 members one has an issue.

Try this:

go to:

GO MY SPACE, PROFILE, COOKIES and clear them all.

Then try again. I hope that works.

This is a good idea. I can give my email to anyone on the boards I want to have it. Many of you have it already. It will hopefully cut down on the "whores in your area" spam and cut out a lot of the viruses I have been getting. The first thing I do when I fire up the pc is delete and block senders of spam without reading it. I just use the properties to look at the email addresses. My firewall and antivirus pick up everything else.

To see your email one must click on your name and look at your public profile. it's there. If we put it on the thread, spybots would grab it in a second.
