Driving home the other day, and saw this bird come off a light standard into a field. I could tell that it had nailed something, so grabbed my digital camera and snuck through the ditch to get some photos. The bird spotted me immediately, but didn't seem alarmed, so I moved closer and closer, snapping pics. I finally got to within 5 yards of the bird, and it didn't do anything other than look at me like "Take all the pics you want, but if you try to take my dinner, I'll rip your eyes out!" Couldn't see what it had caught (maybe it had already scarfed it down by the time I caught up to it), but it was definitely not disturbed. I don't know if it is an immature bird or not. Looked a bit scruffy to me. Anyway, enjoy! Click on the pic to enlarge.

No, that's a full adult. Notice the bright tail color. My ignorant guess would be that either the bird is ill or that it was a falconer's bird for a winter that was released in the following spring. That might explain why it wasn't the least alarmed by you. Probably it was pissed that you didn't offer it a snack. Sarge Holland's .375: One Planet, One Rifle . . . for one hundred years!
