I an considering picking up a 25-06 for southern whitetail when i hunt the open. i own a 257 MKV but the constant worry about the stock and the metal being damaged worries me because i usually hunt the open area in bad weather. i am thinking of getting the 25-06 because of less recoil from the same size package and less weight.

Last year in MS I shot 4 deer. The ranges were 33,70,319,345. Only one ran 80 yards before piling up.My load was 57 gr R-22 behind a 100 gr sierra SBT. I have many other guns but this gun impressed me this year. Also shot a deer in AZ at 276 same load great performance. Hope this helps.

My advice is to quit worrying about the stock getting scratched and a rust spot on the barrel. Use your Weatherby and quit worrying, the rifle won't melt, hit the wood inside and out with some car wax and use some on the metal as well and hunt with it. It is the perfect long range deer rifle and mine is a one holer with 100 TSX's and RL22, but only shoots them 3650 fps. It shot a three shot cloverleaf this morning. A shot not taken is always a miss

KSTEPHENS, Why not put an HS Precision stock on the rifle and as jstevens suggested car wax on the metal work? Worth trying.........the 257 is fantastic on deer. Verbera!, Iugula!, Iugula!!! Blair.

I am in the it's never to pretty to hunt with crowd. I have an $800 curly maple stock on my .300 Winny and it goes out rain or shine. Life is to short to hunt with an ugly rifle. Don Nelson Sw. PA.

I'd go out and hunt that rifle... what good is a rifle that you can't take outside? Townsend Wheelen once said: "only accurate rifles are interesting"... I agree, but would add: "only hunted rifles are interesting". The first thing I do when I get a new rifle is take it out back and drop it in the dirt... then I turn it over and drop it on the other side. That way I remember that it's a tool. I can strap it to a pack-frame, throw it muzzle down on the truck floorboard, lay it on it's side while I crawl 100 yards trying to get a shot at a coyote... whatever. Point is, having a rifle you worry about is like having a hammer that you don't want to scratch. Hammers are made for pounding nails... and a .257 Weatherby was created by the Gods on High to Donkey-Punch the crap out of misc. deer size critters!! I love every ding and scratch on my rifles, the blueberry leaves smashed under the barrel, the dried mud caked unto the seam between the recoil pad and the stock. Hunt that baby... git-r-bloody. I think lifes to short to worry about your rifle getting ugly! ~JT I shoot you... you go down.

the .257 weatherby is the world's most overrated cartridge.....in the field the 25-06 is the equal and the .257 Roberts isn't much of a back seat shooter! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Come on, dog, The .257 Roberts? I'll agree the .25-06 is close to the .257 WBY, but the Roberts? LLS

That's like saying the 7x57 is equal to the 7mm Rem. Mag. "in the field"... I think we all know that just ain't true!! The .257 Weatherby will do at 150-200 yds what the .257 lil'Bobby will do at the muzzle. ~JT I shoot you... you go down.

I see no need to batter a rifle that should be behind glass. So put the Wby in the meuseum and get a synthetic stocked .25-06. It'll work so well on deer you won't miss the other one. I've not loaded for the quarterbore Weatherby, but my Roberts is within striking distance of the .25-06. I really can't say there's much difference. Nate

I've owned two .257 Weatherby rifles, three .25-06 rifles and three .257 Roberts rifles.....the only one I use today is the M-70 FWT .257 Rob as (frankly) it does everything the others did! More velocity does not always make a practical difference! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I will say this for the 257 Weatherby however.....the most incredible "splat" I ever made on a prairie dog was with a .257 Wby..... Talk about mist!!!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." How could that be? With all your experience in the quarterbore realm... you actually noticed a difference between the .257 Roy and the .25-35 WCF... on a critter no less? I thought there is no difference in "field performance" between it and the .250 Savage, or any other anemic twent-five... after all "more velocity doesn't always make a practical difference". Bust out the 99s boys... we'ze goin prarie doggin!! ~JT I shoot you... you go down.

My brother has a stainless Vanguard Sub-MOA in 257Wby I have a 25-06 Remington Sendero My rifle is a long range varminter that I can use on Deer and antilope. His rifle is a long range antilope/whitetail rifle. Neither of us shoots anything other than 100gr bullets at "meat" And though some will talk about 120's if I want to toss 120's I own a 6.5mm and a 7mm. I normally wrap mine in that camo tape stuff.. Seems to work. Just take tape of at end of day and oil it down as usual. Also improves grip. I dropped a slick bbl rifle out of a stand a few yrs ago. I am lucky it did not go off as it hit butt first. Also no dings or scratches.

There ain't no such thing as a rifle too pretty to use! I say hunt with the nice Weatherby, it's the way Roy would have wanted it. Scratches and scrapes are badges of honor for rifles. _____________________________________________________ No safe queens!
