In 1994 I bought a full-auto M-16. I soon took it out to shoot it and it never worked properly. The bullets just wouldn't feed from the magazine. About 2 months ago a friend of mine that is a Colonel in the USMC got me with one of their small arms specialist to see what the problem was. Seems there was no problem at all with the gun--only the cheap bulk ammo I had bought for it. With quality bullets, it was in perfect shape. Since my gun was made, the military has updated these guns, though the action is basically the same. Most newer guns, of course, only shoot in 3-shot burst, as compared to full-auto like mine. Seeing the new version of these guns being carried by our guys in Baghdad, as compared to my version which was carried the Mei Cong Delta, I decided I wanted to update my gun. I've finished it now, though I'll be adding a vertical foregrip next week. Here are the before and after shots. What do you think?

Very impressive! Now all you need is a 458 SOCOM upper to go with the .223!

tiggertate,
I've been reading a bit about a .458 SOCOM, and it sounds like quite a weapon! Here's what I found:

quote:
It is basically a 50AE case stretched from 1.3" to 1.6", necked to .458" with an '06 size rebated case head. From the AR-15 it launches 300gr bullets at
2100fps and 500's at 1400fps. Energy is nearly 3,000 fpe and it has a Taylor Knock Out factor of 45. For comparison the .223 has a TKO of about 6.

It's interesting that these large bullets will still fit in a standard magazine, though obviously fewer (10 in a 30).
Do you have one?

I have two, one in an AR platform one in a Remington EtronX to be supressed (actually, the supressor will fit both).

I think the velocity on the 300 is a bit higher than what can normally be obtained in a 16-20" barrel More like 1800-1900 and although 1400 with the 500 gr Hornady is doable, that bullet is really meant to be shot subsonic.
With your lower, I would get an MWG 90 round drum; it will work with the SOCOM and the 223 without modification.

The case head on the 458 is actually the same as 7.62 x 39, not 308 Win. The Beowulf is the same as the 308 but the SOCOM came out first. It gives a lot more veratility in bullet choices.
