Just out of curiosity, which gun manufacturers chambered a "sporter weight" rifle in the 6mm Rem, and are any being made these days ?

I haven't checked recently but believe ruger is.
I think remington has a special run in their pump gun in 6mm. Has a maple stock

Yes...Ruger is (It seems) the only manufacturer of the 6MM Rem.....Even Remington only makes it in the heavy barrel varmint model.

Buy a Savage, buy a barrel, wrench, and headspace gauges, and presto, you've got your 6mm. And, it will be an accurate one too, I would bet.

But do yourself a big favor.
Make sure any rifle you buy, build or convert to 6mm
is a Long action.

It's a great cartridge, but it doesn't really fit in a 308-length
action.

Allan, what would I have to do to change a Savage 111 from .270 to 6mm Rem? Would it just be a simple barrel change or would I have to change the bolt head?

the 6mmRem is essentially a necked down 257Roberts or if you prefer a further necked down 7x57? it has the same size casehead, so you don't need to change the bolt head to go from a 270 to a 6mmRem.

SOME actions designed around the 30-06/270win
length cartridges use a spacer at one end of the magazine box or the other for the ?x57mm
cartridges, just like the Remington 700 uses
a spacer at the back of the magazine box and a shorter follower. when 223 family cartridges are used in a 308length action.

Do whatever you must do to resolve any feeding issues you may have, but of course you may have none to deal with....

Rayderluvr--

Go to www.savageshooters.com and do some reading, especially in the FAQ section. You'll get all the advice you want and need there. They are the experts.

Grubby,

I have a couple of factory 6 mm Rem rifles: one is a Ruger #1b, and the other is a Rem M7 Youth (one of the "grandkid guns"). I don't know if Ruger still catalogs the 6 mm, I do know Remington does not anymore in the Youth model.
