What is a good varmint/night hunting pig round (close range <100 yards) for a short barrel? A HK SL8.

45-55 grain ballistic tip or hollow-point?

A 55 soft point would be a better hunting bullet for hogs than either of the two you list.

There is no "hunting" ballistic Tip in .22 caliber.

If your gun shoots its well, the Sierra 65 grain GameKing or the 64 grain Winchester Power Point would be a better choice than a frangible varmint bullet. Even the Hornady 60 grain SP would fare decently as it is one of the tougher .22 caliber bullets out there. The 60 grain Partition is also a viable option.

Barnes makes a 70 grain TSX. It's got to be a missile of a bullet so check your twist rate.

I've had good luck with the Partition, and IMHO it is the only one I could recommend for pigs.
Doubtless there are others just as good, but it's the only one I've used.
Best of luck.

Cheers, Dave.

Not necessarily for varmint hunting, but deer and pigs don't like the 60 gr. Nosler Partition. My daughter uses that bullet in her CZ 527 w/20" barrel for Deer, and Pigs if we get the chance.
Thanks, Doug

I'd use a minimum of the 53 gr barnes tsx for piggies. If your barrel has a fast enough twist you might want to go with some of the heavier bullets.

There are two .224 bullets that I would consider. The 60gr Partition, as mentioned above, and the Sierra 55gr HPBT. They both shoot very accurately.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!!

x2

The 60 grain partitions turns the .223 (and .22-250, etc.) into a whole 'nuther animal.

They are also one holers in my Savage.

Does any factory loads for the Sierra 55 gr HPBT?

Any luck with the Hornday .223s?

THE best deer and pig bullet is any hi vel 22 is the 60 gr. Hornady HP or SP..You will get two holes in most instances and if you recover one of those littl bullets it will be mushroomed picture perfect...

the sierra 60 hp is the only that shoots well at all out of one of my 22-250 rifles, and it is pretty tough. i think the hornady 55 grain sp is tougher than most. does not rip up groundhogs like the sxsp. i have not shot real hogs in the U.S. has anyone tried a mil-spec (hot) 55 grain fmj on hogs. seems the good penetration and fragmentation would do well on that sort of a critter inside of 150 yards.

I doubled checked - My barrel is 20" with 1-7 twist. Would heavier bullets work best?

I use 55 gr NBTs driven by DP2200 for varmints and 60 gr NPs driven by RL-15 for deer. The twist of my 20" barrel is 1 in 9. The Partitions print 2" higher than the Ballistic Tips at 100 yards for me.

I think that Black Hills has a good range of 223 ammo that would be worth trying in your H&K.

7 inch twist is what Barnes recomenbds for the 70 gr TSX ... It should work well . but I don,t have any experience with it yet ... I,m going to try the 53 gr TSX as I have the slower 12" twist in my 223 .....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
