At first I thought it was intended as a long range varmint bullet with a light jacket and hollow point to maintain a high BC. My local gunshop guy called Hornady and asked. They said it was intended as an elk bullet, with a heavier jacket. Sounds like a good big game bullet to me.

I'm using the 117 gr Hornady boattail in my 25-06 now, but I prefer flat based bullets, so I'm looking at bullet options and this one certainly looks good. Has anyone used this bullet? What cartridge and results did you have? thanks...

It's a fairly stout bullet and indeed intended for deer-sized game. I wouldn't exactly consider it an elk bullet, but with careful shot placement (and staying off the shoulder bones), it will do.

I never really cared for that particular bullet. What I did use it for, however, was to fireform a good many .257 JDJ cases as it has always been one of the lowest-priced .25 caliber bullets around and has been "closed out" by many shops.

Thanks Bobby. I should have clarified...I'm looking for deer bullets. If I go after elk, the 338 will be coming with me Big Grin

I thikn I'll pick some of them up and see how they do.

I have herd great things about the sierra 117 grain HP. I am drooling over a chance to try the new 110 grain Nosler accubond. (my 25,06 is under construction) ...tj3006

My experience with the Hornady 120 gr. HP out of my .25-06’s and .257 Weatherby is sometimes on chest shots on deer(even larger Mule deer) they would open up and sometimes they wouldn’t. Thus acting just like solids leaving you with an exit would, 1/4†in dia. or less, that closed up thus not leaving a blood trail. Now I buy a few boxes every so often off Ebay for a song and use them for target work as they did give good accuracy. Give me a more accurate bullet that does open every time, the Barnes TSX in 100 gr. version for deer. Lawdog

jro45-Not all HPs are intended solely for targets or varmints. In addition to the Hornady bullet in question, Sierra makes a number of HPs (GameKings) that are actually stouter than their soft point counterparts.

Barnes X, XLC, Triple Shock? HP's that are definately for hunting. As are Groove, and GS Customs, I am leaving out the "standard" bullets from the list but I think if you tried a few you may be a convert!

The Sierra HP Gamekings are great deer bullets. I've used them in .25,.308,.284 and would use them again. Nate

I have used this bullet in the 257 Roberts and killed a pickup full of whitetails-all with one shot......it has proven exceedingly accurate in several different 257s, also....cannot say enough good things about it.....

Lately I've been loading the Nosler 115gr Ballistic Tip Hunting bullet. Heavier construction for deer with a longer profile with the plastic tip.

As I said in another post--I'm still looking for a lighter constructed 100gr varmint slug.

and I'd take a 338 over a 25-06 for Elk too.

The 120 gr Hornady HP is "THE" most accurate bullet in my 257 WBY. It wouldn't be my first choice for elk but it would beat the hell outta throwing snow balls at them. I've used mine on whitetails and antelope and it is a spectacular killer.
