Have any of my fellow handloaders out there safely achieved 3,000 fps with a 250 gr. bullet in the .340 Wby? I currently average about 2,940 fps in my Mk V stainless 26" barrel with a 250 gr. nosler partition on top of 87 grs. of RL 22 lit by a WLRM primer all rolled up in a Federal .300 Wby case necked up. I repeatedly hear of this velocity level being attained. However, I get apprehensive to really open up the throttle and go for 3,000. I know the extra 60 fps is a dubious gain at best, but 3,000 sure is a nice round number!

David....This probably isn't the answer you want but what would be the point? 3000 may be a nice even number but if doing so strains things pressure wise,it seems a poor trade. The difference would never be noticed by you or the target.

Foe whatever it's worth..I shoot a .338 Win Mag. Took it for moose 2 yrs ago. Handload was 250gr Speer Grand slam in front of 67.5gr IMR 4350. MV chrono @ 2583fps. Well short of the 3000 you desire. The point is that the bull I spotted at a measured 268YDS (laser rangefinder) took less time to go down then it took me to recover from the recoil. My question I guess is why do you need 3000 whe you can only kill something so dead. Don't strain the hardware, be satisfied with what you have. My rifle also doesn't shoot minute of angle. It does however, shoot Minute Of Moose.

David. You have to use very high pressures to reach the 3000 feet. I have a 338 Lapua Mag with 31.5" barrel that will exceed 3000 with 250 grainers, but I do have to push the trottle slightly to do so. The Lapua case has about 18% larger capacity and is ower 40% heavier than the Wby, massive brass walls to keep the pressures wher they are supposed to. Id wote against 3000fps with 250gr in 340Wby. Sorry for this AKI

David: Have tried the same with 7828IMR, was up to 2980, and finally backed the load down to 2900fps- brass is to expensive to use it up in 3 or 4 times.

In my .340 WBY I was never able to achieve more than 2980 with 250 gr bullets and that was really pushing it. Definite signs of excessive pressure were noted. The accuracy was also terrible( 3 inch groups)and I subsequently sold the rifle ( bore was ruined by the previous owner). I have a homebuilt .338 ultramag that will exceed 3000fps with 250 gr lapuas with RL-22 but just barely( <1 inch groups). Case life is short! 250 gr Lapua scenars and 250 gr. Sierra spbt bullets work really well in this caliber. Interestingly, a WBY 460 with 350gr Hornady's will readily exceed 3000fps with no pressure signs and much less perceived recoil than the .340 or .338.This isn't a real long range bullet, but its amazing to note that it will exceed both the .338 ultra, .340WBY and .338 lapua top velocities with a 100gr heavier bullet.

I have seen guys talking about 3000fps but they have longer barrels like 35 to 40 in. I think that you could do it then. You have to have something to burn all that powder in. a 26' or even a 30 is just not long enough.

Why not rather take a long 200 grain bullet to 3300 fps? It will go further, flatter and have less wind drift and will do as well on game as the 250 gr bullets.
