just got a new XR-100 in 204 last week. Ordered a mueller 4-16 from the optic zone for it. While waiting for the scope I point bedded the rem. action in accraglass. Stuck the scope on last night. What a suprise. for $190 this is one hell of a scope. It wasn't to far off of dark but I had to at least shoot this thing last night. How about a 3/10 group from a brand new barrel. Load was 29.5 gr on 748 and a 32 gr hornady. Only thing I really need now is to have one of the local toms wander by Cool

I have the XR in a .22-250 and waiting for bases and rings to come in from Optic Zone. Yours is the second XR .204 that I've heard of that shoots well. Hope the same for mine. Maybe Remington is starting to get the idea.

A local gunshop had an early order in for the .204 and had it on the shelf two weeks ago. It seems as though Remington is shipping one at a time to dealers, so wouldn't expect to see more than one or two at a gunshop. I spoke with a Remington rep back in Feb. at a hunt seminar and she told me they were just getting production started on the .204. Keep looking.

Got the scope on my XR-100 .22-250 and had a chance to get a few rounds through it between rain showers. Got it on the paper and then shot 5 at 100 yds trying to beat a rain shower. With a regular ruler <3/4". The rifle will shoot better once I get a descent day. Sweet.

You guys: I am so jealous! I have the raving, rash in my panties hots for a Remington XR-100 in caliber 204 Ruger myself (please review my recent posting regarding the wonderful 204 Ruger cartridge in the Varminting section!).
Butchbloc - that is an amzing start for your new Remington!!!
I hope you have continued good fortune with that rig!
If you do not mind my asking what price range was this rig? I have to start hiding money from the VarmintWife ASAP! No one in Montana or Idaho will even quote a price for the XR-100 to me so I am in a slight bind here.
Be sure and try the 35 gr. Berger bullets in your 204. I have a pair of 204's now, one is a Ruger 77 V/T and the other a Remington 700 VLS and they both shoot this Berger 35 grainer very well!
Quarter Round: Does the XR-100 take a special base or is it the same as a Remington 700 or a Remington XP-100 base? I better get that show on the road and round up a base if its a special needs one!
Hawkeye Pierce: I know how you feel! Montana is the greatest place on earth all things considered but we are the last place on earth that "new stuff" shows up at!
Where abouts are you at? I am out of Dillon a couple miles.
MHO: You have partially answered my "how much" question regarding the XR-100. Thanks for that link. They are starting to show up I guess and thats good news.
Quarter Round: Good luck with your 204 - Ground Hog Devastation who posts here often sure likes the AA 2230 powder in his 204.
Long live the 204 Ruger!

Guess it's time for my .02 cents worth. After waiting for what seemed at eternity, I finally got my hands on 2 of the XR100's in .204. I had to find out if the gun writer knew what he was talking about. Guess Remington didn't promise him a bonus to brag up their new baby. This particular writer couldn't make his shoot worth a hoot! The first one I took out of the box got a Redfield #47169 Jr Mt put on it(same as the Rem 700 SA, only uses the front 2 holes and 1 rear), Redfield 1" Med Rings, & a 16X Target, and proceeded to fire form some brass. I did not have a accuracy problem with mine. It got the barrel broke in about as proper a way as I know. This particular rifle seems to prefer H335 with Win SR primers, and the Sierra 32 gr bullet. I have went through about 6-700 Hornady 32 VMAX in various .20's, the Sierra seems to have the accuracy edge. Never tried a Berger, nor do I feel I need to. This XR100 will put 3 in a tight cluster, I did not measure it, as my groups would never measure in the .1's and .2's as a lot of the shooters seem to get. I probably measure my groups wrong, I always measure from the 2 fartherest apart holes, not the 2 closest! After a friend seen the targets from the first XR, he purchased the other one, so I have no idea how it will shoot, but I can be assured,if it don't shoot, he will let me know.

These are starting to show now on the wholesalers shelves. If anyone wants one of these in a sealed factory carton, I have access to them. They are not cheap, and I do plan on making a profit on selling them, or I will leave them lay at the wholesalers. One of these if anyone is interested will cost them $700.00 to their FFL....

Price is on par with SwKs quote.

The Rem. Mdl. 7 and XP 100 bases fit. I put Leupold 57277 - STD 7 Matte 2 peice bases on mine. You can also put the 700 short action bases on as SwKs stated.

I shoot the .204 in a much milder 5mm Craig. Cool The XR shoots .224 / .22-250

Hawkeye Pierce: I meant to ask you (and not Quarter Round) where in Montana you are. I am just outside Dillon down here in SW Montana.

Quarter Round: Thanks for the information, options and verification on the bases for the XR-100!

SwKs: Thank you for your information and price check! I appreciate it. I hope your Remingtons keep shooting well for you!
I know about group measuring and have some grains of salt around here for dealing with some of them. I do know this for sure though - I myself only do load testing anymore under near perfect conditions! I only test loads when the wind is near dead calm and when the sun is low and at my back! Luckily both of my ranges have the targets to the north of the benchs!
If you were being facetious (making a funny) about other folks groups and wondering if you were measuring yours correctly I won't detail how I measure my five shot groups! But if you are truly wondering about group measurements I will gladly relay my method.
Since incorporating this no shooting in the wind preference I have noticed my groups are much more often lacking in fliers that cast doubt on loads.

measure to the outside edge of the fartherest 2 holes or in some cases the edge of the hole Big Grin and subtract for the caliber. i.e. hole for .204 = .248-.204= .048 group or extreme spread is .689-.284= .405 284 win group...got it?

Anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time.

Mho: Mike I do much the same as Lofter does except I long ago learned that my various .224" bullets make holes in my official BR targets that measure .208" to .210"! Now thats not much difference but it does throw your groups true dispersion off by a tad when one makes the assumption that ones bullets makes a true .224" hole (or .243" or .308" etc)!
Visualize a nice group with a single cluster of bullets! You measure it on different diagonals to find the greatest distance from the outside to outside hole edges. You come up with this number (lets say) of .328"! Then I go find a "single" bullet hole made in that type target paper on that day and subtract that measurement from .328. Usually like I said the measurement I come up with for .224 caliber bullets is aound .210" so lets subtract .210" from .328" for a fantastic group size of .118"! If we used Lofters method of full bullet size the group would "apparently" be somewhat smaller at .104" (.328" minus .224"). If you understand my contention then you will see that measuring a single hole and subtracting that measurement will give you a closer to true group size reading for your "one hole" type groups. Remember we are trying to find the true center to center of the bullets that made the holes in your target. This measurement is called "the grouping" and is usually measured and defined in thousandths of an inch (.001").
Again this smaller hole size in paper compared to the bullets true diameter holds up consistently when I measure them.
I don't know why!
Maybe the paper stretches a tad when the bullet passes through!
If your group has one or more seperate and distinct bullet holes in it (as most of mine do!) then just measure the different diagonal distances from corresponding edges of bullet holes (low left edge to low left edge or top right edge to top right edge etc) and no matter what the bullet size you are actually measuring "center to center" right along with corresponding edge to corresponding edge!
The real BR types have special optical gadgets to measure groups (both one hole and dispersed bullet type groups). I don't have one but I have watched them in use many times.

Hawkeye Pierce: Big Gunshow in Missoula this weekend. I am hoping to make it but am low on mad money! I am saving for an XR-100 Remington in 204!
Maybe I will sell some stuff and stash that moola also for the XR-100.
More later

Groundhog devastation: Charlie those are some amazing groups you shot with the "boomer"!
That would make one heck of an Elk Rifle (if it shoots the larger bullets nearly as well!)!
Just thinking about the recoil from that rig gives me the twitches and a behind the eye headache!
You should post those for everyone to admire!
Keep up the good shootin!
I am gonna go take an aspirin.

Hawkeye Pierce: I have three invitations for this weekend! I was invited to go to the weekend long Horse and Mule Sale (and party) in Salmon, Idaho! I am not much of a partier or a horse and mule guy but both the guys who invited me are BIG TIME Elk Hunters!!! And spending some motel and restaurant time with them would earn me some new Elk invites - I am sure!!!
Then I was invited by an old work mate of mine who now lives in Corvallis to come stay with him and do the Missoula Show!
Then I was invited to do a "cash" paying robbery suppression detail on the coast (starting Monday - need to leave Sunday). So I am trying to decide on my priorities here!
Maybe I can do all three on a hit and run basis.
Yeah the Gophers are out but it snowed 3 inches here last night and 6" south of here. It won't last to long but the fields will be muddy for a while! I am not sure how much the Bighole got! Maybe several inches of snow also.
I am having a real hard time being patient for the big herds of Gophers to show!!!
Is the gunbroker thing an online service or something in Montana?
Good luck with your XR! I need to get this robbery suppression detail done and I will be bucks up myself! I already have the scope for my XR-100! Its the Nikon 6.5x20.
I have a 6x24 Sightron I got at a Gunshow on one of my 204's and an 8.5x25 Leupold on my other 204. When I get the bucks for my XR-100 in 204 it is going to have to settle for that new Nikon 6.5x20 that I got a real sweet deal on last month.
My point being the 204 shoots so fast and so flat that it can handle (take advantage of) lots of scope power (like 24X or 25X).
Again good luck when your 204 gets here!
Be sure and try the Sierra 32's when you get a chance.

VG, I'm not "computer literate" enough to post the pics!!! You can post them if you want too!! I'd appreciate it!! SUPPOSEDLY I have 500 SIERRA 39 grainers headed this way from a big supplier!!! I like what I've seen on paper and can't wait to "ruffle some fur" with them!!! At 3700+ and the BC they've got they ought to work!!! They sure work well at 400 yards on the soda bottles!!!!!! And the NIKON 6-20 dials them up and down too!!! Just may have to take this "factory rifle" to the "egg shoot" in a couple weeks!!! May even have to pay the extra $20.00 to enter the 300SAUM Sendero in it!!!! Now that's a combo!!! GHD
