I am looking for a cheap and accurate .223 bolt action. The Ruger American looks like it might be a prospect but would like to hear from people who have one regarding the good and bad.

I have one, shoots very well, better than my Rem 7 stainless. I can't say anything bad about it, other than maybe the short mag not being able to use heavier bullets. But I don't use any over 55.

Accurate, reliable, cheap.
I have one in .223, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 17HMR

They all feed and function well with with any factory ammo tried. The .223 likes pretty much everything tried from 40gr-55gr. Never tried anything heavier.It shoots as good as my Cooper 21 .223 and nobody will steal it.
My only gripe is that I wish the trigger could adjust down to 1 lb instead of the 3 lb +- that they bottoms out at.

My Ranch Rifle loves the 50gr American Eagle and my 55gr handloads with Sierra Blitz-King bullets.

Captain Dave;

What stock is that Ruger wearing? It looks a mile and a half more useful than the OEM.

Count me as a Ruger American Rifle - Predator fan. I have 2 in 223 and am very pleased with them, but think that they are much better when bedded in the Boyds stock in a style that moves you. I'm moved by Boyds Heritage style.

I have a small pile of CF RAR-Ps; 204, 223(x2), 22-250, 243, 25-06, 260(x2), 6.5 Creedmoor(x2). I've restocked 5 of them with the laminated Boyds Heritage, different colors for different cartridges makes it easy to pick the right one out of the rack.

My American .223 groups very well, under an inch with just about any combo. My RAP .243 shoots about an inch or slightly more. Terrific hunting or truck rigs with accuracy that usually far outweighs its inexpensive price and cheap feel. Again, a fantastic choice for riding the truck seat.

MDT LSS, just get the Ruger GSR 223 magazines for it, they work better loaded with a full ten rounds that the MDT magazines do. My MDT mags are only reliable when loaded with eight or less rounds.
