20' barrel on 6.5x55 mannlicher too short for cal?

I plan on ordering a 6.5x55 cz rifle this week to add to my 404 and 9.3 cz's. I love the classic look of the full stock, but I'm concerned that I'd be losing too much velocity with the 20 inch barrel. Does anyone have any experience with these and know what sort of performance and velocities you get out of a shorter barrel? Will it really make much of a difference between the two? Thanks fellas.

I've not shot a 20" 6.5x55 but I have shot a 20" 7-08 and a 19" 243. They are normally moderated but I did shoot the 243 without a couple of times

I've got sensitive ears but I have to say it was very loud with a brutal muzzle blast. Without ear protection it would be an ear wrecker.

Velocity is an issue. IMHO shortened rifles are more affected than the books say. It quite often takes a while to find the right powder/bullet combination.

20" is not that short. I would expect careful loading to get around 2,750fps with 120s and 2,550fps with 140s (probably RL22). You might get more but there are an awful lot of brave reloaders on the net.

Another issue to consider is that the barrel is not free floated. Full stocks have a reputation for not holding zero.

sure don't notice anything with mine. so you lose a couple hundred feet in a 20" vs 24" - big deal, you're still shooting a 120 gr at around 300 FPS and that'll get the job done on most anything you'll be shooting at

IMHO,

A full stock just doesn't quite look "right" on a long-barreled rifle. In the real world, don't believe the 20" barrel will make a lick of difference.

The "Classic " length in the Mannlicher-Schoenauers was 18.8 in the 6.5X54 and 20" in the other calibres -IIRC.

Great choice

I would not want to use an 18 to 20" gun for 1000 yard competition, but at normal hunting distances it will do fine.

I have done a lot of hunting with 308's and 375 H&H's with 18 to 20" bbls with no problems.

Also I have shot several 18 to 20" 308's, on paper and steel, at 600 and a few at 800 yards with excellent accuracy.

Yes, I have experence with these and they are what you would expect....a short range light game rifle with a long freebore for 160 grain bullets which you will never use b/c velocity is so low as to be not useable. The long throat will prohibit the use of accurate 140's.

Thus far everyone is majoring on velocity and not on real world things such as noise, flash, pointability and steadiness which in truth matter more in hunting.

I've not found that to be the case.

Mine have grouped 160's, 140's 120's and even 100's well.

Many years ago, the short light 256 ML and 6.5ML were VERY popular hunting rifles.

My 308 and 375 H&H Tracker bbls are my most favorite bolt rifle hunting guns.

I find they have plenty of velocity, accuracy, I do not find them to have too much flash, or noise.

My full stock rifle is a Ruger RSI with 18.5" barrel. My pet load delivers 2550 FPS at the muzzle. From a 22" barreled Winchester M70 the velocity is 2610 FPS. Not a hell of a lot of change. The load from the RSI did drop a nice Mule Deer at 250 yards laser measures so it would seem to me that the velocity loss from the shorter barrel was no big deal. Just work up the best load you can find and shoot it out to the longest distance you think you might have to do.Works for me.

popcorn I've used the Swede and Carcano with 18" barrels open sites and 160 grain bullets. Never had a problem with mule deer out to 150 yds. BOOMroger

My 6.5x55 CZ550 FS (Mannlicher stock) has no problems noted whatsoever, great little "woods" rifle. A handload consisting of 140gr Hornady SP, 46.5gr RL-22, Lapua brass, and Fed 210s is sub-moa in my CZ (3-shot) and extremely effective on whitetails. Barks a little bit, but no where near as bad as my 22" 30-06 Zastava.

Both my girls cut their teeth on the big Axis deer in Hawai`i with sporterized Swede CARBINES! [Boy if I had known back then how scarce the carbines would become!!!] They NEVER had problems with the 140s and even the 120s. Maybe not exactly 264 Win Mags but certainly plenty for the stuff over there and those were only 18.8 in barrels. I`d never kick one out of my arsenal.

I don't know what the CZ chamber is like, but I doubt that CZ chambers a rifle so it will be incapable of good accuracy. The 20" barrel is no handicap. I have a M/S carbine in 7X57, and have previously owned two in 270 WIN, 20" barrels all. And they all shoot well with chosen handloads.

I have a Sako 75 Finnlite with a 20 Inch barrel and it is a dream. Muzzle blast is not an issue and with 130 grain bullets every deer I've shot was dead on the spot. It is my favorite whitetail gun!

What about 18.5 inch barrel on the Ruger RSI? Can someone give an opinion on that? I just like the looks of that rifle.

I don't much care for barrels under 22 inches (especially in small bores), but balance is the most important factor for me. Lou

A buddy of mine had the Ruger International bolt rifle in 308.

It was an excellent hunting rifle.

I put all the details on this thread in the Lefty's forum. I also had a twin built in 9.3x62. Both rifles are a joy to carry and turned out great. I simply love the feel of Mannlicher rifles and have several in my collection. These two feel the best and will get lots of hunting time. Gary Stiles builds a nice rifle and anyone looking for an affordable custom would be wise to look him up. He is also a very nice guy who enjoys working on rifles.

I have hunted extensively for about 25 years with 20" barreled Mannlicher Schoenauer carbines in 270 Win. They did not suffer much from short barrels, and I am not yet totally deaf, either. I was able to get over 2800 FPS MV from 150-grain Nosler handloads, and 3000 from the 130-grain bullets.
