Anyone using 5744 in their varmint cartridges...

I recently played with it in the 22.250 case and got some impressive performance results...

very accurate, very consistent...

anyone else try it in these caliber ranges.. 20 cal to 6mm?

I've tried it in 223 with 55 gr cast gas checked bullets, 11-13 grs, 1897-2069 fps. I never did find an accurate load with it in the 223 with this bullet, best was 12 grs at 1933fps yielding about 3 moa with a little trash left in the barrel. This barrel had 5800+ rounds thru it when 5744 was tested and is ready to be replaced, just can't bring myself to pull it yet, now has 6k+ and still shoots moa with my preferred load- the magazine box has been lengthened 1/4 inch-at around 4000 rds- a 55 gr BT is just barely in the neck to get even close to the rifling, damn Savage makes a good barrel. thumb I have tried this powder in many rifles from 06 to 300 RUM with cast bullets and good results.

It makes a great reduced load for a 375 H&H!

6,000 rounds in a Savage 223 barrel, may show some throat wash out, but I have seen ones with a lot higher shot count than that, still accurate as hell..

although not the focus of the thread, but I know that when accuracy does go to pot in most 223s, H 335, BLC2 and W 748 can still bring their accuracy potential back on par...

on the faster powder end, so can Blue Dot and SR 4759...

I ran a Ruger VT 15,000 rounds down the barrel, traded it off finally by getting a "too good to pass by" trade in on a Savage 12 BVSS ( new)..
but the person who bought it from the dealer, had put another 2,000 rounds down it and it would still shoot groups that you could cover with a dime at 100 yds with 25 grains of H 335, and a 55 grain Ballistic Tip...

that barrel of yours should have a long way to go before being shot out..

I've shot a pile of it, but all in moderate pressure loadings and most with cast bullets. If you wanna count the .25-20 WCF as a varmint cartridge, I use it in that. 10.5 grains does well behind an 80 grain GC bullet.
