I use Nosler Ballistic Tips and Sierra MatchKings depending on the rifle.

They both work great, and each rifle likes a slightly different load.

Couldn't "vote" for both, so I just posted here instead. If I *had* to only pick one though, I guess it would be the Nosler BT.

Believe it or not, one of the best 22 centerfire bullets I have used is Rem's Power-Lokt HP's. I've used both the 50 and 55 gr versions in 222, 223, and 22-250. Very accurate with the right load, devastating on sage rats and digger squirrels, and inexpensive. All that means I vote "other".

Craigster and Spencer,
Thats why I had the "Other" slot. If enough peopl participate it should give an indication of the bullet that will usually perform in the .22-250. Thanks for the input.

If you want adequate bang for your buck the 55 gr. Varmint Nightmare bullets from Mid South are surprisingly repeatable in my .22/250 and my.222. thumbroger

BTW, I would also recommend buying a box of Winchester USA 22-250 ammo in the boxes of 40.

It shoots amazingly well for cheap factory ammo.

Just took some out of the shop one day to screw around with and I was really impressed.

With the 46gr HP's a customer brought in some reloads he made one time and a target w/ 220 Swift and you could cover 4 or 5 holes with a dime.

I use so many different bullets in my 22 caliber centerfires, the shorter list would be if you find a varmint bullet by a major reputable manufacturers that was inaccurate?

I have been so surprised at some of the bargain priced bullets, on their accuracy..
52 grain Speer HP, 50 & 55 Grain TNTs, Hornady's SPSX line, Winchesters 46 grain HP. ( my blue dot, 223 bullet load!)

I actually enjoy shooting varmints, a ton more than deer hunting anymore.

Cool

Guys,

I use Speer 50 gr. TNT's exclusively but have tried Hornady (A&V Max's), Nosler (SB & BT's), Speer, Sierra & Remington and the Varmint Nightmare bargan basement varmint bullets from Midsouth. Have yet to find any reasonable/repectable .224 bullet that won't shoot very well with any sort of normal load development (and I normally hit a real zinger within 1-5 tries using recommended powders/loads for the catridges).

Net, for me it boils down to bullet quality, load results & price (in that priority) - Speer delivers on all of my priorities with TNT's.

The TNT's started out as one of those "I'll give these a try to see what's all about" routines and discovered they are not only very good value (@ 1,000 boxes) and also shoot fantastic with pretty stiff loads (no, won't specify any load!).

Use them in .222, .223 & 22-250.

Cheers,

Here's another vote for Speer's 50 grain TNT...it shoots as well as the others but at a very attractive price and the terminal results are excellent.....

I'm still in load development for my 223 and 223AI. Have shot 50 gr B/T's, Vmax, TNT's and 45 Varminter's all were grouped very well while fireforming with low pressure loads at 100 yds. Working up to 28.0 gr of 748 in the AI the TNT's started to really shine, haven't chronographed the loads yet but it's going to come down to what your gun likes. I think I'll end up loading the TNT's in the AI and then see what the 223 likes.

Gotta say I love my 55 gr moly v-max's. The thing I dislike most about them is that they shoot better than I do! Every time I get three shots in one hole, I go and throw #4 and/or #5. Soon enough, I'm going to have to give up and just start doing 3-shot groups!

Most of my shooting with the .22-250 is at woodchuck. I prefer the Nosler 50 and 55gr. Bal.Tips. They do an excellent job. I've also had excellent result with the Sierra 52gr. HPBT. It's not sold as a hunting bullet, but performs well on small game. Most of my shooting is from the bench so I always have hundreds of the Sierras around and sometimes use them on smaller critters. Best wishes.

About those power-lokts from Remington, do they come apart as advertized, not ricochet? Is the 50 grain bullet softer than the 55?

Now for cheap "do the deal" bullets the Remington 50 and 55 PLHP(PowerLoktHollowPoints) are pretty darn cheap good shootin bullets!!(I prefer the versions without the cannelure). The "WhiteBox Winchester USA" 45 grain HP's,in .223 availble for 12.99/40 at any of the WallyWorlds which now dominate our landscape, have proven to be "just ducky" in a host of .223's!!! If you are still reloadng for a .223 you're wasting time!!! Just go buy factory and have fun!!! GHD

52gr SMK is dead nuts for us. 40gr and 50gr NBT's are en-route. The 52gr speer BTHP has been wicked in my 222rem. The 50gr v-max has been superb in my 220 swift, so I guess I don't really have a preference.

It's not at all surprising to see the Hornady bullets in the lead here but for grins it must be said that the competition for .224 bullet sales is quite keen and no one makes a bad one.

The Speer TNT and the Varmint nightmares are also excellent bullets.

This thread has been ressurected from 4 years ago! I'll expound a bit further. As stated earlier, the Remington PLHP's are cheap, accurate and effective. The absolute best bullet ever offered for use in a 22-250 ceased from manufacture back in 1977 or so.........the SPEER GOLD MATCH 52 grain HP! Accuracy and repeatability and "killability" were it's trademarks! Differed greatly from other "match" bullets as far as "killability" goes. Others match bullets just went in, went out and sometimes the varmint died and sometimes it ran off with a hole through and through............not so with the SPEER GOLD MATCHES!! Went in, disapated energy, rendering the insides of vermin to be like jelly and very rarely exited.........if it did exit, it was an extrodainary exit!! I've seen crawl-offs with the various 6's, .308's(all the 30's, not just the 308) are notorious for crawl-offs, a few 270Win crawl-offs, not very many 25-06 crawl-offs but NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER a crawl-off with the SPEER GOLD MATCH 52 grain HP! And that was a lot of vermin struck with that bullet at varying ranges. The closest thing to the performance of those bullets available today is Hornady's VMAX line of projectiles from 17 up thru the 308's! "Way back when" I started reloading, I had a little saying that "Sierra gives you accuracy and decent killing abilty. The best all around performance shot to shot and results on real game........deer or other such varmints". "Hornady gives you decent accuracy and "the most blood and guts" for the money. "Speer gives a pretty darn good mixture of accuracy and blood and guts." Manufacturing and materials have change over 35+ years but some things still hold true. Sierra GameKings and ProHunters perform the same, time and again! Hornady still has the "blood and guts" thing down pat and Speer still makes good bullets that will get the job done! My diatribe for the night! GHD

The old poll survives. Good to see additional input. 22-250 loader shooters might find the other polls associated with this interesting; powder and bullet weight.

GHD how has the groundhog population faired this year in VA?

I'm with Seafire. I shoot .222s, 223s, & 22-250s. And I shoot Pdogs. I use Sierra MKs for matches but I buy 55gr bullets wherever I can get a good deal in bulk. Usually Rems or Horns. Some of the most accurate .224 bullets I've had was a bag of bulk Hornady bullets "with a channelure" believe it or not. They would outshoot Sierra MKs both the 52 and 53gr bullets. I really thought I was onto something but when I bought the next sack, they were good but not like the first.
If I was shooting Ghogs, where I might, on a good day, get 10 shots, I might use a premium bullet, but in Pdog shooting, in one day, you may get several hundred shots.

GHD,

The reason Sierra keeps performing the same is that the .277 130gr. GK has no change in material or design in over 65 years.

I bought some old ones and asked the Sierra Techician about them and that's what he told me. Maybe many other Sierras are the same as well.

I mostly like the Hornady V Max best in my 22/250 for accuracy, price, and killing. Merg

your comment about Sierra bullets prompted me to do a little research. When I started reloading in the early 60's, I used a 130gr FB Sierra bullet in my 270. I don't recall a BT version being available, but perhaps it was. I looked in my 1st edition Sierra manual(cc '71), and it indeed had the 130gr BT listed. But interestingly, the GameKing moniker was not used until the 3rd Edition (cc '89).

To be a picker of nits, don't know for sure when the 130gr BT was intorduced, but don't think it could have be over 65 years ago, as Sierra was founded 62 years ago (1947) Smiler

My 22-250 "Best" load is:

55 grain Sierra HPBT's
32.6 grains of Benchmark
Fed 210 Primers
three shots into a 1/4" group at 100 yards, using a 36x Leupold Target scope I use for developing loads.
Next best, and VERY close to the Benchmark load is:
Same bullet
35.5 grains of Varget
Same primers as above
3 shots into a 3/8" group at 100, with same 36x scope.
Bullets saeted .010" off the lands.

WinkThe 22-250 has accuratly pushed the 34gr. Hp Varmint Nite Mare from mid south at over 41 fps. From all I know this bullet is the most inexpensive bullet on the market. Two of our constituents on this form will be testing this bullet on game ,hopefully, in the near future and posting field results. ( Nudge ) beerroger
