With a long throat in a bolt action 2800 fps + with a 120 grain bullet.

I'm getting high 3100s/low3200 with 87 grain Sierras and H-4895, and I don't think I'm fully maxed yet. Close but not quite...... 22"bbl.

Thanks much guys, I wonder if a 100 is about all one needs in this round for deer, I know a 110, etc. will carry a tad more, but hear the 85 Barnes thru 100gr C/C, etc will all do fine.
Considering a 250 - always had an interest, looking at a ready made rifle, vs. either punching it to AI or ordering one in AI should I give the 25 bore a go. Had a 2506 long ago but it was more than what I need for how I typically hunt.
Certainly not a speed freak, but comparing this to other rounds I am familiar with using.
Seems like a very gentle recoiling/blast deer slayer.
My old Savage 99 has taken several deer with a 100 gn. handload with ZERO problems or complaints. Range has always been well under 100 yds. For Hogs...I use something else. Precise bullet placement will be required to prevent those fast, lightweight bullets from coming apart before they penetrate sufficiently.

i think a real world goal with a standard bolt gun wojuld be about 2900 with a 100 and 2800 with a 110. Sure with a long throat or if you really want to push the pressure envelope another 100 fps can be had but most of my 250s have shot better at this level.

I owned a Rem 700 Classic .250 Savage (24" barrel) for a short time and only worked up one load for it. It used a 100 grain Sierra propelled by H414 powder for about 2950 fps. That load might (or might not) have been a little sticky in a Savage 99, but it indicated less pressure than most loads for .243-.308, etc. that you would use in a modern bolt gun.

I used a Ruger with a 22 in barrel in 250-3000 this year on two does. The 1st one was broad side at 160 yards. I poked her with a 75 gr orignal X bullet at 3300 (mz velocity)and she died. Went about 45 yards. Did not drop any blood but I saw her fall and did not need a blood trail. Little expansion and full penetration with no bones hit and little meat damage. She weighed 110 lbs field dressed. The second doe was at about 40 yards and was hit broad side with an 85 gr Ballistic silver tip at 3100 fps. Again full penetration but with about a 1 inch exit wound No bones hit on entrance and clipped a rib on exit. DRT I like my old 250 A classy gun in a classic caliber. BTW I get 2875 with the 100 gr NBT and it tips deer over quite nicely as well. I will some day try the TTSX in this little rifle. But they are pricey little bullets and what I am using now seems to work well enough.

I need to correct myself on this statement. I am getting those velocities with 75 gr. Sierra HPs not 87 gr sptz. With 87 gr. sptz. I am getting mid to high 3000 fps. with an occasional low 3100 fps. With those I don't think I am maxed out yet.

Dear 6.5 BR, One can reasonably expect about 3050 with most 100 gr 25 cal bullets in a 22-23" barrel. I get this in my wifes 250 -3000 mod 700 with a McGowan 1-10 twist barrel. Accuracy is excellent [as one would expect with a barrel like a McGowan] and killing quality is great. P.O. Ackley told me way back in 1972 to shoot ONLY the 100s in ALL my 25s and, so far, he was right. I like the 100 gr Sierra Gamekings and the Hornady Interlocks best for the game around here. Always work and not much meat loss if any! Aloha, Mark
