Like a fool I put a scope on it & shot it. 60gr HPTS shoot 3/4", 85 gr sierra's 1" & 100 gr Hornadys 3/4". I'm thinking about using it as a summer truck rifle. Which of these 3 bullets should I use? In the summer I shoot feral hogs, dogs & cats + an occasional yote & crow.

You should be able to shoot those 85's quite well, maybe a little load refinement is in order, it makes for a great all around bullet. Feral hogs would do best with 100 gr, I am not sure what bullet you are using, but I usually like the tougher types for hogs (barnes, partitions, interbonds, etc). I traded in some stuff and have a 243 win sps coming in, thinking about turning it into a 7-08. Luckliy I know better than to shoot it after reading your post. I also have a fantastic 243 already.

I am a big fan of the 358 Winchester and I can understand the desire to build one using a rifle purchased as a donor. What I cannot understand is the notion that a rifle that shoots well in its present form is ¨too good¨ to be used as a donor. That is utter nonsense. The accurate donor rifle is an indication that all is well with this gun and it can only be improved by the proper installation of a quality barrel chambered in 358 Winchester. You can keep your poor shooters. When it comes to building a custom rifle I certainly don´t want to start with a problem child!

Hey Tom, Since Hogs are on the list, I'd prefer to go with the 200gr SP or RN Hornady in the 358Win. Wink

That accuracy with most 243Wins is tough to consider giving up. I've got a 243Win S&S M7 that needs to be converted to a 358Win too. But like yours, it is currently just too accurate to consider. Fortunately the 350RemMag is available should a Hog need killing.

But, I'd use the Heavier (weenie) 0.243" Bullets, with the 100gr Partition on Hogs. And I'd see if I could get some of the 75gr Sierras running on a similar Harmonic for the Varmints.

Best of luck to you.

I altered a finely accurate 270 to 35 Whelen just because I wanted the Whelen. The Whelen turned out to be a finely accurate rifle also.

Shoot whatever bullet you like. The lighter bullets are more appropriate for the varmints. They are also good enough for any hog that is small enough to eat. If the hog is large enough to need a larger bullet, then it's too large to eat and it is preferable that it run off somewhere else to die, anyway Big Grin As my friend who shot a big hog with a .243 55gr Ballistic Tip said, "Perfect shot. He'll die, but not on my place".

I have rebarreled two Sako 243s to 358 and one Winchester Classic Fwaetherweight. Best moves I ever made;however now I am looking for another Sako in 243 to keep as a 243. No, I am not coverting any of the 358s back to 243. Lou

95% of a rifle is the barrel and how it resonates with the rest of the rifle.
if the barrel is "happy" where it is it might not be somewhere else.

Then again if a 243 wasn't what you really wanted why worry about it?

Used 243 and 308 chambered Rem700's are common enough...

what's to saw that a 358 chambering in the same rifle wouldn't also make a good truck gun?
