I would like to purchase a 257 Roberts. Does anyone besides Ruger chamber in the 257 Roberts?

Occasionally you will see Remington Classics for sale although they are not current production, I think they also made them in Mountain rifle configuration as well, sometimes you will see Winchester (USRA) Featherweights in .257 as well. Ruger is current production but I can think of no one else for now.

And on the super rare occassion you may see the Remington Custom Shop M7MS in .257 Bob.

PS: Browning chambers their BLR in .257 Bob.

Robert

Other than Ruger, I think you are either going to have to keep your eye out for a used rifle, or buy a semi-custom/custom (ala NULA), or have one built by a smith.

As an aside, there have been special runs made for distributors over the years in the bob. I have a Remington 700 ADL that was just such a deal....

Find you a decent priced used savage and rebarrel it to a 257. You could probably end up with no more in it then a new rifle. Nice thing about savage is you can order a fulley chambered barrel and headspace it yourself or have a local smith do it.

True, but for the $$, you get way more in a Ruger than a Steven's.

The best way to get a Roberts is simply to rebarrel a '98 Mauser.

Winchester chambered their post 64 featherweight for the Roberts and Browning chambered the A-Bolt for it but finding them used is unusual.....also the pre-64 winchester was chambered for the Roberts.....shell out a lot of bucks for one of these!

Roll EyesThe accuracy from the .257 Browning I owned was just good enough for hunting (2 1/2" at 100 yds.), but that was about it.My two Ruger .257s, Varmint,Tang safety were absolute tack drivers and still are after 34 years. fishingroger

OK, If I want a 257 Roberts I will have to have one made. Next question, Because the 257 is based on the mid sized 7x57 will I have to use a long action or can I get by with a short action?

Thanks

I had a 257 built on a Medium Length Sako.
Seated bullets to SAMI standards and shot
the hell out of it. It was actually more accurate than the 3" OAL often touted. John Barsness had a Remington 722 that belonged to his Grandmother that he wrote about. No problems with the short action. The 120 Gr
bullets are seated a bit deep, but didnt seem to kill the spirit of the 257. If you want 25-06
ballistics, get a 25-06.

That rifle sounds like the ideal one, on a medium length action.
I asked John Barsness about action length before having my Roberts built, as I wanted to go with a short Rem 700 action. He said go for the short action, which I did. There are no issues with going the short action route as long as you have the gunsmith cut the leade so you can seat whatever bullet you want to use in it close to the lands.
I also have a Roberts on a long action. Both rifles are keepers.

One of my favorite rifles is a 96 Mauser barreled in .257 Roberts, perfect action length in my opinion. Mine started as a Husky 8x57 that was re-barreled to 6.5x55 when I got it so I did a re-barrel to .257 Roberts.

Snellstrom,

Neat looking rig!! Sweet, light weight, easily handled, and I'll bet it shoots well too.

You can also watch the gun shops and websites for 1950s vintage Mannlicher-Schoenauers in .257 Roberts. I found a .257 Carbine a couple of years ago that shoots the current Winchester .257 +P load into a half inch at 100 yards, shocked the living daylights out of me, since the same gun was a 2-3 inch grouper with my handloads and all other factory ammunition. Picked up a .257 MS rifle last year, have not gotten around to seriously targeting it yet.

steve,
a real good action for a Roberts if you can find one is a mexican small ring mauser.
I mean a 98 not a 93 or a 95.
I just bought one a few weeks back for 350.00.
Not sure yet what I will do with it. I had some scope mounting issues with it,
But I got those taken care of. It still has the origional military barrel in 7X57 turned down very nicly.
But The magazine box is just a wee bit short for the 7X57 as far as I am concerned. I can seat to about 3.10 But the rounds won't feed till I get the to about 3.050.
Both my Roberts rifles are built on long actions. My factory ruger and 03 springfield are both throated for seating at a little under 3 inches.
A yougo mauser would be another good one.
But any short action Ruger or remington would do fine...tj3006

Take A look at the MRC short actions. I had a 7x57 built for my son on one of these actions. You can go a little more than 3 in. in the mag. so it is the perfect lenght for the 257 Rob. That said mine is a rem. classic build on there long action and that works fine also.
