I am thinking of getting a .17 rem for a light walking varmint rifle. It will be used on mostly groundhogs and an occasional fox or coyote. what kind of range should I expect out of the rifle to consistently kill groundhogs? I usually shoot either a .223 or a 22 CHeetah but both are heavy for just walking around. Thanks!

For fox and ground hogs 300 yds is a sure kill if you hit them where it counts.
Coyote no more then 200 yds unless you use 30 gr bullets.

Todd Kindler [Woodchuck Den] writes of routinely taking 'chucks at 400 yards with a .17 Mach IV. The .17 Rem is definitely a 400 yard chuck gun, especially with Kindler's 27 and and 30 grain boat-tail bullets.

FWIW:

There is an article in this issue of Small Caliber News written by a guy who takes Alaskan wolves at 400 yards with a .17 VLR [30 grain Kindler "Gold" bullet at about 400 fps]. Get the article. The guy swears by it.
