Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt or Rock River It mostly depends upon what configuration, or caliber and what you intend to do with it. For sheer accuracy I would vote for the Colt Accurized Rifle (Model - CR 6724) I believe. See their website. If it's class 3 you are looking for, then rock and roll as you find it. One piece of advice would be to go with a flattop model so that you have all the possible sighting advantages. The AR's are way more fun to shoot then they look! Smedley My neighbor had an Armalite match grade AR. It was a shooting machine. I used to load some for him now and then. It shot some pretty nice groups. I just never cared much for the triggers on those AR's. Even the reworked ones aren't anything like I'm used to on a bolt gun. | |||

Thanks Folks, Just some more info for ya: This is going to be a mulcher for me. By this I mean a fun shooter that is fairly cheap to shoot. I take rounds of firewood hanging from a cable and wack 'em out at 200 over at the property. (see below  )I used to shoot the M16 for qualification for Uncle Sam. I always did like the way they shoot and like I said as a mulcher, it's gonna be a kick. I already got an SKS and AK47 but nothing in the 5.56 size! After reading your last post, I believe Bushampster (  )is the rifle you want. They seem to be built as good as any other brand with loads of options available. Bushmaster still chromes their chambers and bores, you might lose a bit of accuracy but gain a lot of durabillity.Rock River Arms and Armalite seem to make good rifles too. Colt is OK if you can find one at a decent price. Stray away from Olympic. DPMS makes good parts, I've never seen a completed rifle. Have you thought about building your own rifle? If you can install a hot water heater in your home you can assemble an AR-15 as it's more plumbing than gunsmithing.  | |||

Smedley: Don't know what your budget is but I would look at the Bushmaster Preditor if you want a factory shooter. If you want to build one you could do better for the same price. Use a Bushmaster lower unit and get a upper unit from Accuracy Systems, they are avaiable in both the 223 and the 204 Ruger along with host of other calibers on http:/www.ruger-mini-14-firearms.com/ar15_conversion.html For the Bushmaster lower with one of their uppers that are ½ MOA guarantee @ 100 yards for some where around $1250-$1350 | |||

After 50 years of bolt action rifle dedication I bought my first AR this year. Why, I do not know. I bought a Bushy Carbine. Originally I thought an AR would be a great tool to have along in my motorhome to deal with those things that go bump in the night. I had so much fun shooting it and I will add it is very accurate I decided to buy another Bushy. This one is a V Match with 20" barrel. My plan is to make this my PD rifle for shooting off the ATV. Took it out for the first time today. After sighting it in, I started to work it. With the first loads I threw at it we were at 1 MOA and better. That excites me. With a little load work, what can it do? Ultimately I would like to buy a Les Baer, but with the way these Bushy's are shooting that decision will take a lot of justification. Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction. | |||

It really depends if you want a carbine or a rifle. If you want a carbine go with Rock River Arms as they have the best variety. If you want a NM High Power rifle also go with RRA as they have the largest following among the professional Service Rifle users. I went with the Bushmaster (voted in your poll BM) for my first rifle as they sell the best rifle that includes the carry handle and a chrome lined bbl. If RRA sent their 20" rifles out to us with chrome lined bbls I would have gone RRA as they are less $$$. FWIW, my BM has been a superb rifle and I thoroughly enjoy it. | |||

Rifleman, Pretty gun. Just my opinion, but I certainly would not want a scope like that on an entry weapon unless you were doing entry work at a gold course or a drive in theater. Inside an average room you don't need a sight if you know your weapon. I'll take a shotgun with buck for entry work....Much more effective!! The year of the .30-06!! 100 years of mostly flawless performance on demand.....Celebrate...buy a new one!! | |||

Seems like most of the manufactures match/varmint models shoot pretty well. I see mostly RR and DPMS scoped, heavy stainless jobs at the club. They do darn good. I watched a fellow breaking in a new Les Baer in 204 with factory Hornady and was quite impressed, he did'nt have a 5 shot spread over 3/4" on his grid target. I pieced my Varmint rifles together, useing WOA 20,26 inch barrels and there tuned RR triggers on DPMS Lo Pro uppers, Stag lowers, Armalite 1 piece scope mounts. | |||

Build your own. Or just buy an assembled upper and a lower with a parts kit. Low budget special.  $510 20" varmint kit (Model1Sales) $100 Rock River Lower Receiver $610 Total !! plus shipping on kit. I bought the lower locally, got the kit 2 days later and had it ready to shoot in one hour. So easy to assemble. This is truly a tack driver. Folks on AR15.com like to bad mouth Model1, but this is a sweet shooter. 1200+ rounds through it and not a single malfunction. If I knew then how accurate (and heavy) they were I would have gone with a 16 inch barrel. Oh, and I added a Rock River 2stage trigger for $85. Much better than a stock AR trigger, but a little goofy for me. I am leaning towards getting a jewell single stage. Good Luck! | |||

Daman, Nice!! I have one just like it with a DPMS 16" heavy and a 4-16x Redfield and it weighs over 11 pounds. Mine is sub-MOA and is good for one 20 rnd mag or so and when it gets hot it takes a long time (30 Min) to cool back into good groups. I have a 16" carbine and it cools much quicker, but shoots 2 MOA. Speeking of heat, just fired .223 on the truck hood will discolor the paint!! I'm interested in how you like the Jewel.
