For a small bore game rifle, as much as I want a 6.5x55 or similar 6.5 in a Ruger #1, I'd have to settle for a 1a or like, in a 270 and just wondered about heavy bullets in 270 vs say 140gr 6.5's in penetration. Shot a Mulie with 150 partition at 28-2850, about 250 yds, did a good deed, almost pass thru neck to ham. Wondering if penetration is similar with high s.d. bullets in 270 vs 6.5, or does the 6.5 usually win?

Technically speaking the 6.5mm/.264" caliber has excellent SD in several bullet weights and edges the .277 caliber on paper. The 150 gr. .277 caliber is neck and neck with the 140 gr. .264 caliber so I would say moot point on penetration in the hunting field. The 160 gr .264 SD is a dandy, but Barnes offers a 180 gr. .277 that has a higher SD than the .264 in all bullet weights.

I don't think you can find the heavy Barnes bullets anymore (but let me know if you can!) I toyed with a box of 160 gr. Partitions, and didn't get great accuracy; but then again, it was only one box and one powder (RL 25). I got about 2825 fps with that load. I also worked up a 150 gr. A-frame with RL-22, going about 3030 fps. That load is a "tad" warm. It does give very good accuracy, though--about 3/4 inch at 100 yards. Haven't killed anything but paper and dirt with either combo! Have fun, friar Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.

There has never been the deer born that 150 grains from a 270 couldn't put in the freezer!.....NEVER! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Nothing wrong with a 150 grain .270 but the 130s and 140s do fine too. That 160 grain Nosler should be great on Elk and as I said nothing rong with a 150 but haw many deer have fallen to a 130 grain .270, not as many as the 30/30 or the 30,06 , but i bet its 3rd on the list...tj3006 freedom1st

I've never had a deer stop a 150gr in a .270, only had one 130gr not pass through a deer, and it was a 130gr Sierra that went in the shoulder, and stopped on the hide of the opposite hindquarter. The 150's are most accurate at a max load, around 3000fps

A deer is going to be hard pressed to tell you the difference between getting hit with a .264 140 and a .277 150. The 270 will have the velocity edge but it won't make a whole lot of difference on target. I just love the 270 Win as well as my 6.5X55s. I use them interchangeably but if push came to shove, I'd have to keep just the 270. My best advice is to get the rifle you prefer and not worry two much about the differences between the cartridges. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

Hello friar, The Barnes line of "Original" bullets are now on a seasonal run manufacturing basis. The 180 gr .277 caliber is available. Either call Barnes for production dates or watch the Cabela (and other) websites.

Well, I ALMOST got a 708 stainless laminate #1 Ruger, but the auction closed early am, and I did not catch that, so never got my bid in! I guess I will either build a 6.5 bore in #1 or get a 270, I do want a 338 Federal and expect to get one in the 1A that Ruger is making. Too bad they don't give us more choices...guess I should get a TC Encore and many barrels! Then I'd be set!
