I have an old and by old I mean at least 30years old Steyr Mannlicher Model L in 243W. I bought it new and it was a heavy barrelled model.
It had been nearly 12 months since I loaded for it and shot it. The only quantity of projectiles I had was some 100grn Hornady round nose I had loaded and then dis-assembled, using a kinetic bullet puller, about 20 years ago.
Any way, loaded 4 x 5 shot loads with the maximum being 40grn of ADI AR2209. At 100yds and shot from the bench, the 40grn load produced a 5 shot group measuring 0.440".
I've now got a re-newed interest in the "old girl" and got hold of a packet of 95grn Hornady SST which have been recommended to me using the same powder.
But I still am amazed with the result of 100grn round nose. It's probably and abhoration but it still was nice.

I've owned several of the Mannlicher Schoenauer carbines. IMO, the best production bolt-action rifle ever made.

I have a left-hand Steyr-Mannlicher Model "M" .30-06 rifle with an 18.5" barrel and the full-length Mannlicher stock. I bought it in Germany in 1978 while I was stationed there with the US Army. I paid about $400 for it at the Worms Rod & Gun Club. It won't shoot one hole groups, but with handloaded 168 grain Barnes TTSX bullets and IMR 4895 powder it will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. I use the relatively fast IMR 4895 because of the rifle's short barrel length. With slower H4350 it shoots flame 2 feet out of the muzzle when fired. Louder than Hell, but cool to see at night! Regards, Bill.

I've always wanted a Mannlicher Schoenauer, what gorgeous rifles they were. They sure have become expensive. The newer Prohunter SBS rifles are nice rifles but butt ugly, IMO.

The Steyr rifles are fine and very good but I prefer Mauser and Heym.

I have shot a lot of, and seen a lot of Steyr rifles over the years.

Every one of them was super accurate.

I also have a Prohunter in 223Rem. IMO it's not as ugly as my Savage LRPV but I wouldn't part with either rifle. I worked with a guy a while back who found out I was interested in firearms. He told me he had an old rifle in the shed on his "hobby" farm. He finally remembered that it was a Mannlicher Schoenauer. Could not get him to bring it in but, he wasn't that interested in it.

+1
Collect them.
Only I bad shooter--totally worn out bore in a .256 (even then it would still shoot slightly oversize cast boolits fairly well)
