No, that's all YOU need from a .25 caliber. I need a lot more than that, as do plenty of others. I've shot caribou, deer and chucks at ranges that a Roberts would not come close to handling. I'm glad you're happy with your choice in .25s, now let us enjoy our choices without being told what's good for us. I hear that enough from the current Federal administration......

I'm getting just over 3,600/fps with my Vanguard SubMOA 24"bbl using 100gr TTSX and 73.0gr of RL22. Very accurate as well shoots around 1/2"-3/4" consistently!

TN. You're killing me. I've been on the fence on getting the Vanguard Series 2 in .257 Weatherby, but that kind of performance is antelope-laser crazy. Might do it tomorrow!

Where to start... I have had my .257 for about 3-4 years and I absolutely love it. I have killed coues deer, bobcats, fox, coyotes, baboon etc. Scottyboy has killed nyala, baboon, mtn reedbok, vallie rhebok etc. I have shot 115 VLD and 100 TTSX. I love the TTSX!

572 yards with the 115 VLD

While I have a .257 Bob that I do adore, if I were to get another .25 I'd have to go WBY on it. One day I might do it just for giggles but until that time, you can burry me with my Roberts.
Either way, .25's are just fantastic.

Regards,

Robert

Well, I hate to let folks down, but I handled the Vanguard Series 2 in .257 Weatherby, then I handled a discontinued FN Winchester Model 70 Xtreme Sporter in .270 WSM. I studied the ballistics, thought about what I would like the rifle to be able to do, thougth about feel and quality -- and bought the Winchester. Not only is it lighter, but it has a Bell and Carlson stock with aluminum bedding block, along with controlled round feed and the three-position wing safety.
Maybe someday I will have a .257 Weatherby, but for now, my quarter bore arsenal will just have to consist of my 1948 Savage 99 in .250-3000.

You will love the .270WSM. I shot a .270 WCF for years and now own two .257 Wby rifles - but I'd be kidding myself if I said that one cartridge was significantly better than the other. Obviously I am enamored of this Weatherby cartridge and enjoy the rifles very much, but if I had to sell them and have only a .270 WCF or .270 WSM I'd not be suffering too much.

The perfect group to ask.
My Vanguard shoots the factory ammo to my best of 1.5 inches. I am sure the rifle will do better. I loaded a bunch of 120 grain swagged bullets and found it to have the same great groupings. I am working on swagging some 130 grain bullets next for a friend and wonder if any of you have shot heavier bullets with success.

Slight correction, 257 was Bill's fav, but the 270 Wby was the first in 1943, and the first Wby used in Africa (on a jackal).

Mile High, you are right, 270 WM was the first and the 257 was second.
Frank: I didn't know you were into swaging. Do you have equipment from either Dave or Richard Corbin? Nice stuff!

I have been getting into it slowly. Initially a friend of mine sold me all his old inventory from his business. He showed me how to do it using Corbin presses including the Hydro press which will run lead wire for the correct cores and swage heavy jackets of copper and brass. I have since purchased a couple of the small Corbin's and some dies but am limited as to what I can do with them. My Pal decided to restart his business and applied for the license in May. He get inspected this week and we hope to get it up and running to fill a few orders for Heavy-for-caliber bullets. I am also looking forward to getting some heavy jacket bullets made up for lighter calibers that drive at high velocity. Extended range and momentum with higher BC in theory means more knock-down power.
Frank

By the way. I also shot the .270 WSM for awhile and enjoyed it as well but last year found a wonderful Wby in .270 magnum and have since since the short mag in favor of the WBY rifle.

To be honest I gave the 257 a hard look when I built my last rifle. I simply couldn't pass up the economics of having a huge supply of '06 brass on hand, and went with the 25-06 AI instead.

While I might have give up some to the Bee, I am getting along pretty nicely with my 28" Broughton and can easily push 3400fps with 120gr bullets. This said my best accuracy so far has been just over 3350fps and it drives them into little tiny groups at 300yds.

I originally built ti to shoot some 125 and 130gr Wildcats, and had hoped to get some 142's to do well from it, but I simply cannot get enough powder in the case to get the longer missiles up to speed even with the 1-9 twist.

Speaking of those heavier bullets, Frank do you have any news on those 130's we spoke about?

Boy there's the venison supply for the year! Did you get your youngster to put up your firewood supply too?

Sometimes, but until he can drive I still have to tag along.
It's slightly off topic, but here's another one from last year. Kid's a couple years older, and I made him trade Weatherbys for the day. This one has been rebarrelled to .300 Win Mag.
