Well guys I'm about to do some loads in this fairly new rifle of mine. I have a load with the 110gr Accubond and 37gr of IMR 4350 that a fellow has shot in an identical rifle to mine and grouped very well. I have some of most all kinds of 25 cal bullets for doing loads and a wide variety of powders as well. I don't have any of the 80gr Barnes bullets.
Should I try and keep the velocities around 2600 fps for this 18 1/2 inch barrel. I'll be shooting deer with it likely around 200 yards. FS

Hello

Must be 250 Savage week !!

I've just gotten my rebarreled (21 3/4")Mauser Kurz in 250-3000 back from the 'smith and have a bunch of cases ready to load as soon as a tin of IMR 4320 arrives.

I'm going to try Sierra 100 gn SPBT for starters.

Mine will also be a deer rifle and I have some Accubonds but no one has ever been able to say for sure how they perform on deer at 250 Savage velocities so I'll be looking forward to a progress report . . . .

Cheers - Foster

I wouldn't really worry about how fast you push it just work up something accurate and you will be impressed with the .25 cal killing power.

Just a suggestion for the "new" 250/3000 shooters; RL15. I have had great results with RL15 and 100gr bullets(Sierra SBT,BalTips and Partitions) in a 250/3000 and two 250 Ackley
Improved 40*. I don't use the lighter bullets especially for deer.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!

The 85 gr. GS Customs is a great deer bullet. I suppose the 80 gr. Barnes X is also..You can get a bit more velocity with the monolitics and still get the penetration of the 100 gr. cup and core bullets or even the premiums..With that short barrel this would be an excellent option.

The 250 is one of my all time favorite calibers and it seems to kill way out of porportion to its balistics, and I have had much better killing power with it than any of the 6mms for whatever reason.

In my youth my family shot a lot of elk and deer with the 250 Savages all mod 99 EGs and we used the 100 gr. and 117 gr. Corelokts and 100 gr. Silvertips and they worked fine on elk and deer. I used the 25-35 early on and it worked well if you were careful and didn't try to strectch the range much, and put the shot behind the shoulder. the 117 gr. 25-35 penetrates extremely well, probably because of the slow velocity of about 2300 FPS.

My M77 Tang Safe Ruger likes H4895 and Varget better than RL-15 for some reason. I use mostly the 75 Sierra hp on varmints and the 100 Hornady Interlock for deer. Mine groups much better with the lighter bullets, though it will do 1" or slightly over with the 100s

Thanks Ray and gang.
I'm going to try some 4350, some Win 760 and some Re15.

Ray when you say " in your youth" about how long ago are we talking?

Well, I'm 77 now and I remember the big depression vaguely but I clearly recall the aftermath of it and WW11....

It was a mispent cowboy youth and I was fortunate to have been around back then. I don't know what more a kid could ask for than cowboying, hunting and going to Marathon Texas on Sat. night to the dances at post, but the drive home on that 100 miles of dirt road could be exciting after over indulence of whatever was available.

BTW I go to Ariz. some winters to team rope steers and the place I go to is overun with Canadians from around Edmonton, their a sorry lot that don't cut Texans much slack, its a kick and all those guys bring big salmon, moose, elk and their wives get together and feed us every night. We rope every day from 9am to about 3PM for fun, then go to money ropings on weekends..If I win a roping its living hell for them you can bet on that. rotflmo Great bunch of folks.

Be sure and try some H414 in the 250 Savage, it really cooks..

I had every intention of trying all of the recommendations made to me from you fellows but ended up trying a few Varget loads starting at 3 to 36gr and going up 5.
Best group with the Sierra 100gr Flat Base bullet came out right at 35gr.
Sierra boat tails with same powder charges were not very good
Off to the range tomorrow to retest this load and an accubond load with IMR 4350.
Also shooting some Berger 140gr with 48gr of RE 22 in my Steyr 6.5x55.

I owned a .250 Savage in a Rem 700 Classic briefly before someone waived an execessive amount of green in front of me. The only load I used was a 100 gr. Sierra in front of 40 grains of H-414 for 2925 fps (chronographed) from the 24" barrel. This load was accurate enough that I didn't bother with anything else, and it left the primers rounded enough to be comfortable.

I have a grandson that's going to need a deer rifle in a very few years. I think a .250-3000 would be about perfect. Looking for a rifle or a suitable action but no real hurry. Yet.

A note of caution on the 250 Savage. Some of the older Model 99's had 14" twist barrels and will not stabilize bullets of 100 grains and above.

Brice,
Some will and some won't..Having been a Savage 99 collector off and on for years and most of the 1x14 would shoot 100 gr. bullets handloaded, you just had to find the right bullet powder combination..I also noticed that none of them would shoot factory 100 gr. bullets..I'm guessing the factory 100 gr. bullets at low velocity wouldn't work in the 1x14 and the fast velocity was the key????

Also of note is the 80 and 85 gr. monolithics penetrate every bit as well as the 100 gr. std. bullets and kill as well also..Most of these shot well in most of the 99s I tried them in, so thats always an option when all else fails..

Second! on the Classic in 250 Savage. I was a velocity hog, and let a friend talk me into rechambering the one I bought into 25-284.

It was fast, but lost something in the transition. Found LOTS! more recoil.
