22-250 best powder on reloading

Hi,
Putting this question here as I really am looking for input from the small bore crowd on what works best.

My experience clearly focuses on Varget and IMR-3031.

I have had great loads for each and they are comparable on accuracy in 53Gr match bullet at 100yrds. I know 3031 is the old folks powder and Varget is newer.

I only want to try another powder if someone thinks there is a great benefit to doing so.....

I like Varget also. However, my favorite for the 22-250 is RL15!

The real "old people's powder" would be IMR 4064. Introduced for the .220 Swift. Works well in the .22-250, as does 4895.

Lots of good choices available.

i load a lot of different powders in the 22.250. It works well with a host of them, just like the 223...

Benchmark does a good job, as does H 322..

my favorite is RL 7... if you think for old people, find some RL 7 data for the 22.250 and then look how old the source is..
RL 7 is especially the best for 40 grain bullets and I have tested it with the 30 grain Bergers even..

I run 40 grain bullets at 4450 fps with it and got 4750fps with the 30 grain Bergers..

Varmint Grenades won't go any faster than the 40 grain bullets without high pressure problems..

for bullet weights from 50 to 60 grains, my do all load in with RL 7 is a straight 30 grains..

Lots of good powders for the .22-250. My personal favorite is either of the 4895's. Despite its reputation and having ostensibly been named for Bruce Hodgdon's favorite load with it in a .22-250, I have never had much luck with H-380. Of course, "your mileage may vary".

50 plus grain bullets,-Dp 85 and Dp 86.For 33 to 40 grain Bullets DP 73 and Dp74. 40 to 50 grain bullets h-380, 4320 and 4064.You still can buy the DP 85.JMHO based on testing.

I've found H-414 works well with 50 gr bullets. I've loaded some up with H-4895 to see how well they shoot. I also have not found H-380 to work that well in my rifle.

I prefer AA2015, Varget, H4895, and H4350.'

Haven't had much luck with H380, but it often gets praised in the 250.

Out of the 3 22-250s I load for, the one powder that works best in all 3 is H4895. That said, my favorite 22-250 shoots sub 1/2 moa with 52 Amaxes and 55 BKs over AA2015.

Old folks powder has worked well in my Stevens 200. For 55 gr. Hornady V-Max 380 has been the best. Done well with IMR-4895 with other 55 gr. configuations. For 60 gr. Hornady HP and 63 gr. Sierra SMP IMR-3031 has been the best. Varget is fine too. Scared to try 4064 as it may outperform all the rest.

Seems like the 22-250 works good with lots of different powders; just find the one your rifle likes. I have loaded with powders as slow as H-414/win 760 with 60 gr. bullets and that cheap little Stevens digests all of them quite well. Merg

I've been having good luck using Varget for 22-250 and my 223. In fact I'm having such good luck with it I'm kind of tired of it and want to try something different. I recently bought some H380, and have IMR4350 & 4895, so I've got plenty to stay busy with.

Granted it was in the late 1960's but IMR 4064 sure shot well for me then... 53 Hornady HP's and woodchucks, a marriage made in heaven.

H380. then H4895. 4350 is good but can't get enough in the case to get a worthwhile velocity. varget sux.

I use IMR4064 For my 22-250 35.5grs gives me There about 3645 FPS with the 55gr HP.

Just to muddy the water a bit, I tried the Ramshot Big Game in my 22-250 with the 55 gr. SP's. It shoots .5" and that is now my go to load. It is very easy to meter and not too temperature sensative. Give it a whirl just for grins........

I've used IMR 4895 in several 22/250's since the late 60's and more recently in 22/250AI, with excellent results in both.
I use 55gr.(1360) Sierra's for everything from deer to varmints.

I find my best accuracy to be with IMR 4064.
Five shot groups at 210 yards average 5/16X9/16
inch. Load is 34.7 and 53 GR Hornady match and
Fedral 210M Primer. Planing on trying H4895 and
RL15 soon. The best powder measure I discovered
for loading extruded (stick) powders is the Lee
Perfect Powder Measure. Cost is about $22.00
dollars. Very smooth and eliminates about 99%
of cutting powder. Just tricle up the rest.
