Seating depth for 40gn V-Max?

Gentlemen
I recently purchased a bulk pack of 40gn V-Max bullets for my zkw465 in .22hornet. Now when I am loading them, I see that the bullets are way longer than the normal 45gn FMJ bullets I use for game I intend to eat. In order to feed them through the clip/magazine I have to seat them deep, so that the OAL is 1,7" and that the spitzer point is shallower than the neck diameter. Is this advisable? I can also seat them shallower and feed them one by one without using the clip. By law I have to use atleast 40 grain bullets for the intended game.

How to solve this?
Sincerely
Daniel

If you want to feed them through the magazine, you'll have to seat the bullets accordingly. I have that same issue with two CZ 527's, one in 222 and the other in 223. A work around might be to seat the first shot long, the one in the chamber, and the ones in the magazine deep.
Incidentally, both of my rifles with magazines shoot very well with bullets seated so they feed from the loaded magazine. I'm talking 3/8" groups for 3 shots at 100.
Try them and see how they shoot. My 22 Hornet is a Ruger Number 1, so seating is done so the bullets are .010 off the lands. I get good Hornet accuracy that way, which isn't great, but less than 1/2" for 3 at 100.

Huglu,

I have the identical model of Hornet and have the same trouble with the 40 grain V-Max, my solution to the problem is the same as you have already discovered. Seat them short enough to fit the magazine. I have never had any problems with accuracy, my usual load is the 40 grain V-Max over 13 grains of Lil' Gun, seated to 1'.7" to fit the magazine. Hope this is of use.

Sierra data for all their hornet loads, regardless of bullet length is 1.720"....so the ogive inside the neck is not unusual(a bit strange though.)
If you load longer for single shot you can get ~13.7 gr of Lil'gun with 40gr Vmax bullets. I load these to 1.902" / 3105fps with no pressure signs and excellent accuracy. With this performance I pass on using the magazine thumb

Should add that to get 13.7gr of Lil'gun you need to use Remington cases.

Thank you gentlemen!
Then will I proceed to find a load that agrees well with the rifle and see that the ogive will be seated in the neck for proper fit in the 5 shot magazine. It is wonderful that one can learn new things each day.
My current load will be 12 grain of lil´gun and I will work my way up from there.
Hopefylly I will find a load that matches the FMJ that I recently put 2 bullets through a 270win case on 80 m with. For me, thats enough for hunting purposes.

Sincerely
Daniel
